This was a strange movie. I thought it was lame at first, but with flashes of potential that made me want to see where it would go. Thankfully by the end it got really entertaining, especially with a gambit pile-up that reminded me of Metal Gear Solid 3.

That said, outside of that I struggle to think of any real standout qualities of this film, and the actual whodunit is probably the lamest aspect of the movie. I also feels like it's trying a little too hard to be to whodunits what Scream was to slashers. Good movie overall but 97% on Rotten Tomatoes feels like a bit much.

With Johnson's Star Wars film, I found his "subversions of expectations" to often derail perfectly serviceable plots with little meaning of their own. This film was the opposite - the overarching plot was kind of lame but the subversions of expectations made it memorable. And I knew what was going to happen going in and still feel this way!

Pretty good movie. I felt similarly in the beginning but did end up really enjoying it by the end. It's definitely no Clue.

Personally the characters are what stood out to me, even if its not that different from a standard murder mansion movie.

(.....
Clue is still the best)

It was surprisingly good, though still really goofy and dumb.

Knives Out and Murder on the Orient Express were both so great to see come out after a drought of honest to goodness whodunnits in modern cinema. Knives Out was particularly refreshing for its presentation, while Orient Express was bizarrely enough almost *too* faithful of an adaptation. Very excited for Death on the Nile!

You understand that this number isn't about the quality of the movie, right? It's not even how much the critics liked it. Just how many thought it was better than average.

Like, context clues. There's a score RIGHT THERE on the RT page that averages the critic review scores.

Yeah he actually deserves a pass on this one I think. No one would usually have a problem with someone comparing movies from the same Director.

Honestly the subversions of expectations weren't even so much making the movie's plot more unpredictable so much as changing the nature of the story itself. I feel like Johnson's hands were tied on The Last Jedi solely because it was the middle chapter in the trilogy.

Actually I kind of feel like Johnson didn't subvert expectations hard enough on that movie.

I was underwhelmed by Knives Out. When I saw the scenes where the "victim" was near his end I kept thinking "don't do this, you are showing NO signs that the meds got mixed up." If he was actually a brilliant crime/murder mystery writer none of it happens. All he really did is let his family put his chosen heir through hell for nothing.

Good movie. I thought it was starting to tie itself up in knots out-thinking itself towards the end, but it worked.

He apparently didnt know how an overdose of that specific stuff worked and the caretaker was too busy panicking about the missing antidote to just check his symptoms. A bit contrived yes, but I can allow for it if it gets an interesting premise going.
(also the mystery writer dude clearly was too much into the idea of coming up with one last mystery/cover-up)

I'm not supposed to mention Star Wars in a topic about a movie directed by someone whose previous movie was The Last Jedi, yes.
