Should be noted that it's a weird time to enter since some people are predicting another market crash (which *would* be a good time to enter, buy everything up on discount).
In my extremely non-professional opinion based on the fact that you want to grow money but are starting out with $400 a month and ultimately want to not lose any so you can put it down on a house... VYM (Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF) consistently pays about 60 cents a share (give or take ten cents; this last payout was over 80) and the buy in is just under $100 a share. Any extra cash you have at the end of the month put into MAIN (costs about $30 a share right now; has been paying increasing dividends over the past decade to where it's reached 20 cents a share that is paid out monthly). Set up dividend reinvestment plan, treat it like a bank account with much higher than usual compounding interest. Shit isn't gonna take off but you'll make money and should expect to be able to cash out at a net gain once you look to exit. A lot of the executives have been cashing out of their shares of ownership (or at least some shares) and they have a history of diluting the value of the stock for existing shareholders.
