I mean the game got its flaws with the extreme childish whimsical girlyness but the battle system is still freaking amazing and when it does delve into emotional parts it does so pretty damn well. Like Yuna at the spring in Macalania in chapter 5.

1000 Words is a song I listen to regularly since 2004 by the way. Smashing ballad.

yeah i remember having a lot of fun with the battle system

though at the end i remember cheesing the game by having everyone go Dark Knight or whatever and just spamming that move that hurts you and all enemies, switch to a healer and heal up, and repeat.

Yeah, having two Dark Knights use Darkness with the third girl as a White Mage with the accessory which nullifies MP cost is pretty broken.

I watched someone do back-to-back first playthroughs of FFX and FFX-2 recently, and it made me realise that while I 100%ed both games and played them for roughly the same amount of time as a kid, I remember most of FFX but absolutely nothing of FFX-2.

FFX is one of the best games of all time imo so I understand that.

I replayed both X and X-2 earlier this year.

I played the the HD remaster version on PS3 and it looked quite impressive for a PS2 game.

Same here. I remember there being a girl band thing and something with some piano thing at the end with Tidus, but that's about it.

That is all up to you. I played it without a guide the first time but I did use one for certain parts now.

I really enjoy the combat gameplay of the game, maybe to the point of being able to forgive many of the shortcomings already mentioned. That said, the story and execution of their take on this world is so abominable my brain has to actively pretend it doesn't exist for me to appreciate FFX.

I actually love the whole girl power thing, haha. Its really different from the first game, but really fun if you let yourself get into it.

But! The battle system feels super weird to me! Its like they wanted to make an action game but changed it to ATB at the last minute.

I wish they would have portrayed happy Spira a bit different.

Please elaborate? :o

X-2 might have fared better as a gaiden game rather than being billed as the proper sequel. I think a lot of people took issue with its silly tone and blatant fanservice in comparison to the more somber tone of X, and that's valid - but X-2 is a fun game with a lot of depth and content.

I've been trying to 100% it for the last year and a bit, on and off. I'm at 99%, and I think I have to beat Via Infinito to get there. I'm at Cloister 80, my whole team is at lvl 99, and I'm getting my ass handed to me.

Oh! So I just think that, the way all the characters are always moving around the field in real time, and how there isn't really like, a "queue" or any kind of pause for ATB actions, everything just sort of happens automatically regardless of anything else happening on the screen, stuff like that.

Maybe they were just trying really hard to make it feel more active? But it doesn't feel as, I dunno...clean? as like, the earlier ATB games. So it sort of feels to me like they designed a real-time battle system, but for whatever reason, they stuck an ATB bar on everything at the last minute. idk. >_<;

I do think that a """silly""" tone was actually the right call for a sequel to FFX.

Spira has just entered a new paradigm of existence, freed from a thousand years of religious oppression and false dogma. This isn't a time for more oppressive tones, but one of looseness and discovery. I actually think it was pretty poignant of the developers to realize this rather than just churning out more of the same without considering that difference in the world.

It's the exact details and execution of that silly tone that I find contentuous.

I'm on Cloister 84 of Via Infinito. Literally never made it this far down, holy shit.

I finally decided to invest time into cheesing CONGRATS!, which is the only way I beat Chac. And even then, it killed me a couple of times before RNG let Rikku do the thing before Heaven's Cataract hit.

Chac might be my most hated video game boss of all time.

Conversely, Trema might actually be one of my favorites. A million HP, but no cheesy insta-kill bullshit; just a long, satisfying slugfest that doesn't take things to Yiazmat-levels of overdoing it.

I will say, it was a breeze once I cheesed it with CONGRATS!. The only problem is that Trema isn't bribeable.

My current plan for the end of the dungeon is to CONGRATS! Paragon, then have my characters move onto Dark Knight and Alchemist classes on two Garment Grids that enable double HP and Auto-Life. The Alchemist will use Auto-Life on everyone and use whatever high-level buff mixtures as possible, and my two Dark Knights will use Darkness for 9999 damage each against Trema.

Oh fuck, I just activated a cutscene in chapter 5 that put me over the edge.

I don't have to beat Via Infinito if I don't want to. Holy shit.

...I mean, my party's at level 99, and I'm at Cloister 92, so I honestly might as well try and finish it at this point.

Beating Trema nets you one of the most godly pieces of equipment in the franchise, so it's worth the effort (especially if you're doing NG+).

Now that I think about it, I really liked X-2's approach to NG+ as well: keep all your gear, but you start over at level 1. Perfect balance between a god-mode second run without completely sacrificing character growth (something that always turned me off to NG+ in most other cases).

I've been trying off and on since the PS2 release to finally finish this.

Love the gameplay, possibly my favorite in the series, but literally everything else is cringey as fuck.

I think the farthest I've made it was the "Key... Mon?" scene, where I called the trio a bunch of not very nice names, and ragequit.

So fucking stupid...

I was kinda dissapointed after Tifa met with her mother Yunalesca. She's an evil b**** that wont listen to other than Yevon pathetic teaching. Honestly they should've stop dreaming already. Yuna already tries to sacrifice her own life with hoping that she could bring the calm for eternity for spira but it turns out no matter how many summoner performed the final summoning. There's always a new sin that will takes the place of the old sin and the cycles repeat till the end of time. I felt sorry for Seymour, Wakka, Lulu and all that have been affected by the Sin. Yevon that was supposed their bacon of light turned into their worst nightmare, their true source of suffering in Spira.
