Because they can pretend that they loved MLK despite considering him what, a terrorist?

They can't even pretend they liked Malcolm X in the slightest.

They don't even properly educate themselves about MLK. Many remember the brave marches and inspiring speeches but either don't learn about or ignore the violence and arrests.

I don't believe in violence for political movements. I'm fine with it in other areas though. You can highlight all the peaceful protesters all you want but the violent ones always ruin it

no he didnt. He did a march to the police precinct after finding out his brethren got beat and needed a hospital but they still kept him in custody. Other black civilians followed them and acted on their own.

Its interesting that people view Malcom X as violent yet he only ever condoned the use of violence as a self defense measure.... coincidentally the same thing a lot of gun toting conservatives love to talk about.

People get in their mind that this was like 100 years ago and there isn't any correlation with the police brutality, government negligence and the formation of groups like the Black Panthers and the Black Liberation Army.

People who benefit from the status quo don't like those who rock the boat. That's why you get hollow recitations of MLK's speeches, telling people "how they should protest" aka be not seen or heard.

I can't speak for everyone, but growing up in public schools in the 90's and early 00's, the curriculum touted MLK as this perfect, Christ-like figure and Malcom X as a well-intentioned, but dangerous and misguided revolutionary. Kind of screwed up my perception of the whole thing throughout my adolescence. >_>

Maybe schools in other parts of the country were better. Or maybe they're better these days. <_<

Malcolm X in the sheets, MLK on the streets.
The egotistical part of me likes Malcolm Xs empowerment message, but I also know not everyone is me.

Like others have said, people are sensitive and easily discouraged when they hear things that don't sound good. Like, it sucks, but it's a reality. As long as they get the overall goals done, then it's all good.

His biography is a good read

Because of a lot of whitewashing. Both Malcolm and Martin were public enemy no.1 to white America at the time. Martin's message was more malleable to be repackaged neatly, ignoring that Martin also spoke truth to power.

Malcolm never minced words and didn't subscribe to the nonviolent approach where if a cop is beating your ass or siccing a dog on you, you just sit there and take it. Malcolm didn't advocate for violence, but also said "if someone puts a dog on you, then you kill that dog". MLK and Malcolm played the good cop/bad cop role, the Civil Rights Movement needed both.
