he's a legit musician. he's released one EP and two LPs and has been touring around the country since like 2015. he started rising in popularity mid-2018. i got on the bandwagon early 2019.

in 2019 he was named International Bluegrass Music Association's Guitar Player of the Year

Lotta crossover between a certain subset of EDM kids and the jam scene that Billys heavily involved in

i wouldnt assume bluegrass from the posters but its not all that surprising either

I work for a very small record label/promotions company in Nashville, I primarily do digital media, advertising, and a lot of in-town music posters for local shows for up and coming artists. I don't want to specify exact posters I do, it would be very easy to do a few websearches and pinpoint who I am by who I work for as I am the only person on the team that works on this stuff. I don't want CE to have my name and where I work, respectfully.

I will say that I do most of my work in the spirit of Hatch Show Print, the classic 1950's and 1960's ink press style posters, but I do them digital and not from a press. A lot of times my work is translated to a press plate and ran off that way. If you have been on the main strip in Nashville, you have probably seen some of my work hanging up in town.

This is basically what my kind of posters look like

https://hatchshowprint.com/gallery/summer-2018/

I've interacted with him a couple times, once was through a phone call and the other was a quick meet with a handshake. I meet a lot of people here and there, but it's about always while they are more local musicians. A couple guys I worked with have gone on to the Voice and shows like that. Very few make it.

Yeah for example take a look at this music festival lineup just announced today. Billy strings is on the top line and then the entire line below him is electronic music, with the lineup being all jambands or Dubstep/bass

if you really think about it it makes sensenot to be too pejorative as I do like jam, but for many people its just music to take drugs to. Dubstep has that same appeal

i can see that, especially in the first print. his stuff gets preeeetty psychedelic at times, well outside of normal 'bluegrass' boundaries. the other night they played a 23-minute "All Fall Down" that went waaaaaaaay out into space and back. t'was quite nice.

Spinning is weird. he's only done that live a couple of times. BS is one of those music artists that really shines when they play live. don't get me wrong, the studio cuts are great tracks, but they lack the energy and exploration / improv of the live versions. plus the live shows have a BUNCH of covers. lots of old, traditional bluegrass tunes but also random ones like "Atlantic City" (Springstien), "Wild Horses" (Rolling Stones), and "Believe" (Cher).

if you wanna hear what he really sounds like, or rather, why i and most of his fans really like him, listen to his shows. i posted a real, real good one above (post #18). or you can hop on here and browse.

you're not wrong. it's called "heady" music for a reason -- it sounds fucking cool when you're under the influence. that's definitely how the jam and electronic/trance scene overlap.

i got into the whole bluegrass / prog bluegrass / jamgrass / etc. scene because of the Grateful Dead. i've been a big Deadhead for a long time and Jerry Garcia's solo career ventured off into that space, since he was originally a banjo player. it led me down a rabbit hole where i eventually found a whole crap ton of music to fill my ears with.

the Grateful Dead took their rock n roll / country roots, threw in a bunch of eclectic covers and doused them in psychedelia and it's exactly why i love them so much. Billy Strings is doing the same thing, but his roots are bluegrass /super old country /americana / etc

the show the band streamed tonight was really fucking good. it's not just me saying that, i'm seeing a number of people gushing right now over on the BS subreddit. a guy named John Mailander (fiddle) joined for the whole show and was the perfect 5th wheel for the band's mix of bluegrass and psychedelia. he is joining for saturday's show too!

if any of you guys have any interest in what he's doing and really wanna see what the fuss is about, tune in saturday (07/25) at 8:00 PM EST. it's $10, but if you remotely dig what you've heard so far i almost guarantee you'll have a real fun ~2+ hours. i dont wanna get hit for advertising or anything, but if you search for 'streaming strings' you should be able to find what you need. they're gonna do their album "Home" for the second set. it's gonna be real fun.

i've seen him sport a t-shirt for (and talk about) Primus. i've seen him do a cover of Paranoid by Sabbath. i've heard him tease Schism by Tool. he was raised on bluegrass/etc and that's how he learned to play guitar. when he was a teenager he quit that scene and joined a metal band, which he says taught him how to perform.

he got a new pickup and started using it this tour and it adds this awesome distortion/overdrive sound to his guitar which he just tears into smack in the middle of a bluegrass jam and it totally works.

Guitar Peace sounds like it's straight off of a Tool album

the story behind that one is cool. apparently he had a riff in his head, sat down and just started playing off it and recorded it.

Guitar Peace started with this guitar riff in my head. One of the days we were at the studio, everybody took a break for lunch or dinner except me and our producer, Glenn. I said to him: I want to try this weird thing. Glenn has a harmonium, so we grabbed that and set up a couple of mics, and I grabbed this old, early-1940s Martin 000-28. It was a beautiful old guitar that was at Blackbird Studio.

I had this little guitar riff already in my head but, the night before, I had watched this George Harrison movie with my girlfriend, and they were talking about Ravi Shankar a lot in that film. And, for some reason, I wanted to play my guitar without knowing what I was going to play. I wanted to make something up on the spot and feel itnot have any script, not have any plan. So I turned on the microphone, had Glenn put down a drone with the harmonium and played over it. I was trying to play from my soul.
