I think it really acts as an indicator of normalcy and is a present physical reminder of isolation, etc.

A lot of times when people lose control, they zero in on particular things that make them feel like they have agency in their lives. You can essentially be in denial about many of the restrictions in your life that don't come up day to day like not being able to go to the movie theater. But your hair is something that's physically there all the time as a reminder and feels like something you should have power over.

I don't know, I was also laughing at people bringing that up before, but I kind of get it. Not enough to demand everything re-open, but I get it.

I think people should just learn how to cut their own hair. It doesn't need to be photoshoot perfect.

I've always wanted to grow out my hair. Having professional jobs the last 12 years, I never had the ability to get through the shitty hair phase.

Well guess what, I'm in the shitty hair phase. I can almost finally grow out my hair.

Personally, my favorites are the women getting mad that their gray roots are growing in when you've been able to buy dye at literally any store for years. You don't need a stylist just because you can't accept you're not 20 anymore.

A box dye isn't going to look as good as a professional job. It's also certainly not going to match the rest of your dyed hair. It can also go horribly wrong: I once tried to dye mine blood red and ended up with hot pink.

Also, there's a lot of stigma from the world in general against women not looking like they're twenty anymore.

You don't need a "professional job" to sit around the house binging Netflix.

Ive cut my own hair for years so I cant really relate but I understand feeling empathy for others and I dont think youre at fault for thinking this way, TC. However, the world is NOT normal right now because we are in the middle of a global pandemic and going to the salon is OBJECTIVELY not worth risking lives.

getting a quartartine haircut is symbolic of acceptance and dealing with it as best you can.

The longer you hold out the worse it looks. And if you hold onto the belief that everything will re-open "any day now!" you develop an unwelcome anxiety.

Not everyone is sitting around the house binging Netflix. I'm only addressing your incorrect assertion that you can just go out and buy box dye to get a satisfying result. Make no mistake; the "I need a haircut" people are missing the bigger picture.

Also, if you use box dye, your hair dresser will know when you go back and will charge you an ass ton for "color correction" services. Any attempt to refuse them will have you refused further color service.

Dude its hair. Its not essential, at least in the sense that its not worth risking lives.

Yeah I think it's not "I need to get a haircut to feel normal" but more a delusion that "If I could get a haircut, then that would mean things were normal".

It's certainly not rational, but I think it's wrong to conflate it with people who are like "Grr I need my profits back".

Yeah, it's honestly better to just deal with whatever is going on with your hair at the moment. I dye mine an unnatural shade of red, but have naturally dark brown hair, so I have like two inches of weird root growth. I just wear a hat when I go out.

I'm just really emphatic about people not ruining their hair with home jobs. Also, do not cut your own bangs. Disaster awaits there lol

Y'all, don't misunderstand me: I am not on the side of the Karens who are demanding the salons reopen.

People focus on the dumb signs they can find, and I think they aimed at that one because the one about needing a dental cleaning does point out a potential long term issue if this goes on too long and it and other non emergency medical treatments necessary for long term health stop happening.

Me, I find the attacks funnier in that there's so much panic there's no thought. Movie theaters or sports stadiums I could understand how they would have to stay closed, but some of what's being protested for are things that aren't known for being packed crowds and could take precautions with masks, disinfectant, and limiting customers. Haircuts leap to mind as something that should be readilly adaptable to that. Hell, it sounds less risky than buying food you have no idea how many people touched before you got there or had it delivered, but we still go grocery shopping.

Oh so youre just saying dont self-dye during the quarantine, instead dont dye at all until things open back up and you can have a professional do it?

I get women complaining about it as it's usually about their grey roots coming in. Guys complaining? Not so much. Every guy should go out and spend $40 for a pair of clippers and learn to cut their hair at home.

Yeah! I'd advise that during non-quarantine times too, honestly. It's too easy to screw up your hair with the cheapo stuff you can buy at Walmart.

I started getting mine professionally done after the hot pink incident lol

Haha yeah thats understandable.

My main experience with hair dye is my mom and shes always done it by herself but just to hide the gray hair as she got older. With the quarantine, she hasnt been bothering with it, and its kinda scary seeing her with so much gray :(

The haircut thing is so weird to me.

Really early on in the whole thing the Navy ordered all barbershops on Navy posts to close down and they issued an administrative message to the fleet saying hair standards are temporarily relaxed until further notice. Still have to shave facial hair technically but you can grow your hair out so you don't need to risk getting Covid at a barbershop.

Then a few weeks later I see some Army or Marine official making a comment that haircuts are a basic element of good order and discipline, a cornerstone of the regulations, and that's why Marines are still required to have proper haircuts.

Lol the whole thing is stupid to me. I think it's a sad state of affairs if haircuts are one of the key things keeping good order and discipline together.
