Meant to be going end of month for 3 weeks.

I am inclined to go ahead with it BUT seems like loads of shit is closed and unlikely to not just extend their closed dates by another few weeks. Also while I can work from home I'd rather not have to self isolate!

You could die any day

you're should take any experience you can get

imagine if you got hit by a bus next week and never went to Japan so you could do more work

Depends on what you want to do I guess. As a local I am loving it right now. Very not crowded, but I am into to going to outdoor places. I think the theme parks are closed and I wouldn't be surprised if packed indoor places are as well, but the outdoor sight seeing stuff is all largely still open. I honestly can't think of a better time to visit Kyoto than right now.

It seems like a lot of urban indoor attractions like museums etc are closed up until this weekend coming but I don't envisage they have any practical reason to re-open as planned. That's just a hunch but we'll wait and see until this weekend anyway and if things extended their closure times it probably makes sense to just cancel. I get your point and we have/had planned to do outdoor stuff but still. Like we're planning to go to Hiroshima for example and iirc a lot of the main attractions there are currently closed. Still a lot to enjoy there but feel like it would be a bit of a hobbled experience.

I kind of get your point. I have been to all the major museums in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and many other cities and I won't downplay how appealing a lot of them are, however you can easily fill 3 weeks with amazing outdoor experiences. Rather than only going to the major cities, stop at all the other places on the Shinkansen route from Tokyo to Hiroshima. Stop at Nagoya and take a short bus trip North to Shirakawago (most beautiful village in Japan, and the basis for the setting in Higarashi). See the biggest castel in Japan at Himeji. Take the lift to the mountaintop in Kobe (which also has a Chinatown, though the Yokohama one is bigger), see the gardens and lakeside castle in Okayama. Lot of amazing stops along that route that most people just skip. Museums are great, but Japan had a lot more to offer than that.

I cancelled my trip to Philippines next week, which had a layover in Japan.

I got refunds for my flight with no fee which is nice. It's just too risky right now, and my employer would force me into 2 week quarantine if I went.

You are totally correct and I appreciate your contributions itt but I think we had a particular idea of what we wanted to see over there which incorporated the 'standard' areas people check out and I think not doing so and also experiencing the country at a low ebb would make for a less than ideal experience for us. Its also unlikely we'd return any time soon to do the outstanding stuff if we did go so that probably doesn't help either.

It sucks but what can you do!

We do but I don't think it covers us just not going as opposed to if the govt advised against all non essential travel. Feel like that's unlikely unless it goes full blown like Italy

Yeah my wife and I have a trip to Japan booked for the end of April and we're not sure whether to keep it or not. We're waiting til April 1st to make our decision.

It's like you said, TC. Lots of stuff is closed, so it's not gonna be fun. And why spend a bunch of money on a trip that you won't enjoy?

I was of this view for a while (my gf defo wasn't lol) but I just don't see the point in doing a less than optimum holiday and also have it risk me getting sick and/or self isolated with the target that paints on you. Guess we'll go next year
