With no (likely) major Pokemon game this coming holiday thanks to the expansions for Sword/Shield, there's a chance this outsells Gold/Silver and becomes the second best-selling Pokemon game. Mario Kart just kind of releases and does better than everything else by a mile. I'm not sure about beating GS. They sell faster every generation it seems, but perhaps if they market the DLC right. With Game Freak's shift towards expansions rather than enhanced sequels, I think the odds are pretty good. Put it this way: at the height of PoGo hype, Pokemon Sun & Moon sold ~11M in its first holiday season. It's suitable for all ages, but not too kiddy and a multiplayer game everyone plays thanks to its low entry skill level requirement. It also has a low bar in terms of expectations, since no one think it will be a AAA title, but it delivers a good enough experience to make it worthwhile.
