That is... a lot. It's immediately one of the 5 best-selling games for the Switch.

With no (likely) major Pokemon game this coming holiday thanks to the expansions for Sword/Shield, there's a chance this outsells Gold/Silver and becomes the second best-selling Pokemon game.

For context, the games ahead of it (third versions not included):

Pokemon RBG: 31.38M
Pokemon GS: 23.10M
Pokemon DP: 17.67M
Pokemon XY: 16.42M
Pokemon RS: 16.22M
Pokemon SM: 16.07M

If you combine the Switch and Wii U sales, I think MK8 is a top 5 selling Nintendo game? And top 3 if you discount pack-in games like SMB and Wii Sports? The other two would be Wii Sports Resort and... Mario Kart Wii.

It took Smash, BotW, and Odyssey tons of hype and accolades to sell this much. Mario Kart just kind of releases and does better than everything else by a mile. Happened on the Wii and Wii U too!

Mario Kart doesn't start off as hot as most titles, but it just never dies off. It sells a decent number of copies every month into eternity.

Yeah, I think XY and SM were the best selling 3ds titles for a while and then near the end, MK7 just went past them and didn't really stop.

I'm not sure about beating GS. They sell faster every generation it seems, but perhaps if they market the DLC right.

The Switch is past SNES now and moving forward at great pace.

Pokemon games sell several million beyond their first holiday and before the next release comes out. With Game Freak's shift towards expansions rather than enhanced sequels, I think the odds are pretty good.

Put it this way: at the height of PoGo hype, Pokemon Sun & Moon sold ~11M in its first holiday season. Sword & Shield is already well past that!

clearly the price for Pokemon Home was decided based on how many millions SwSh would do in the quarter

Yeah, Mario Kart is essentially the default game for Nintendo consoles. It's suitable for all ages, but not too kiddy and a multiplayer game everyone plays thanks to its low entry skill level requirement. It also has a low bar in terms of expectations, since no one think it will be a AAA title, but it delivers a good enough experience to make it worthwhile.

It's basically McDonalds of gaming.

So would you say slow and steady wins the race then?
