Nice. The Ring is one of my favorite movies. I was even gifted Ringu 2 as a child but have never watched it yet because I want to watch the first one first lol

I never saw the original because I was a massive pansy growing up. Even now though i have the screen only taking up half the computer screen lol.

Oh shit her TV just turned on by itself!

...and that was...surprisingly anti-climactic lol.

Lol this is structured like a Godzilla movie, where all the cool stuff happens at the beginning and then theres nothing but plot until towards the end.

1:10:00 and its still not spooky. Theyre breaking into someones house now though.

I really am liking it so far though. Its like a really long ghost story

So I liked it. The tension was better than any of the payoff, though. Might check out the sequel sometime soon.

Surprised that copying the tape to break the curse was a twist, though. I knew it from hearing people talk about the American version and just assumed that it was part of the premise, lol. The way they did the ending was really good though. I think, from a writing perspective, it's the perfect way they could have ended it.

And the J-pop EDM track in the credits clashes with the whole movie, I love it.

Thats what happened to me too. I was terrified of the ring my entire childhood. It was genuinely the thing I was afraid most of and Id almost get an anxiety attack if she appeared in a jump scare. I saw it (the American remake) for the first time during a party with friends in high school and it wasnt nearly as bad as I thought. We then watched the original and then the American sequel after. It was an Ive grown moment.

Nice. Yeah, I definitely feel you, there. For me, I think I've ended up gravitating towards a lot of the things things that spooked me as a kid. Maybe it's some instinctual need to confront it? Idk, but I love ghost stories and stuff like this now.

So wait Im a bit confused on whether youve seen the American version or not but if you have can you say how they differ?

Did they have something like the closet scene in this (the original) version?

Havent seen the American version. But there were no noteworthy scenes that involved a closet.
They found Tomokos dead body in one but it wasnt especially shocking or scary.

I probably will tbh.

I wikid the franchise and apparently the filmmakers of the original had the bright idea of releasing both Ring and its direct sequel in theaters on the same day. Lol what. And apparently the sequel did so poorly they replaced it with Ring 2 the next year.

Naomi Watts in a bra and panties. Hmmmm...Actually shes pretty cool. I like her character.

So far this movie is pretty much identical though.

She grabbed a fly out of the video tape wut lol.

I didn't think Ringu was scary. But the American remake is a completely different story. That was terrifying. That remake did so much right with the liberties it took, like Hans Zimmer's excellent score and the eerie setting of the Pacific Northwest.

I will say the atmosphere is a lot more creepy in the American version. Outside of like two scenes, the only parts of the original that had me tense were the beginning and the end.

So the remake was pretty good. Dont know what I like better between it and the original.

The original felt a lot more mysterious. It felt like a real ghost story, with a pretty minimalist approach to the spook.

The remake looked better, had more spooky moments to keep my interest in the middle, and we learned more about Samara than we did about Sadako.

The jump scares I heard about werent nearly as bad as I anticipated.

The climax I think was better done in the Japanese version. Sadakos one eye was a better touch than seeing Samaras whole face. And seeing another mangled face of a victim didnt really add much.

But the remake had a more satisfying, if less subtle, way of tying all the different themes together with the final montage. But missed the opportunity to bring it full circle with another ghost story like the original did.

Bahhhh, cant choose. Theyre both good, and Im not nearly well read enough of film to get picky about the nitty gritty.

Gonna watch Ju-On later today lol. Halloween!
