British news hosts tried out a feminist students anti-manspreading chair and found the experience to be rather painful.

Laila Laurel, 23, made international headlines earlier this month after she won a national prize for designing chairs that force men to sit with their legs closed, thereby preventing the practice commonly known as manspreading. Laurel, a 2019 graduate of the University of Brighton, won the Belmond Award in mid-July for her work entitled, A Solution for Man Spreading.

During an interview segment aired this week on British network Sky News, Laurel expounded on her feminist beliefs in regard to manspreading.

I think occasionally it is a micro-aggression, and Ive heard stories from women where it turns into something thats far more aggressive, Laurel added.

Theres a myriad of problems around it, she said.

At one point, Sky News male hosts took turns sitting in Laurels anti-manspreading chair.

Oh dear. My voice nearly raised by about an octave there, one host joked as soon as he sat in the seat and then suggested cutting away so he could adjust himself.

I didnt want any more children anyway, he later added.

The issue that sparked the manspreading chair

In recent years, feminists and womens rights advocates have railed against the manspreading phenomenon. Women complain that manspreaders, especially on public transport, sit with their legs wide apart and take up more space than needed. According to feminists, what may appear to be an innocuous practice, is actually a problematic assertion of patriarchal power.

Progressive journalist Liz Plank, writing for Mic in 2015, outlined the various ways the purportedly sexist phenomenon harmed society.

By virtue of being occupied by both men and women, space is inherently gendered. The way women and men interact is guided by norms and scripts that steer our behavior in a way that is so powerful that it is often unconscious. Research shows that when in public, women tend to occupy less space, holding legs closer together and keeping their arms closer to their bodies. Men on the other hand are more likely to have their legs spread at a 10- to 15-degree angle and keep their arms 5 to 10 degrees away from their bodies, she wrote.

But this isnt just about space. Researchers have found that taking expansive body postures doesnt just make people feel more entitled, it also makes them more likely to steal, cheat and fail to respect traffic laws. So manspreading can breed bigger problems than just crowded subway cars: It reinforces attitudes and behaviors that are harmful for society as a whole, Plank added.

In 2017, Madrid banned manspreading on all forms of public transport. New York Citys Metropolitan Transit Authority targeted manspreading with a public awareness campaign in 2014.

Guess some people haven't had their late life ball drop. I mean they're lucky because saggy balls sucks because it just takes up more unneccessary room and it sticks to your legs much easier, but seeing guys say you shouldnt have to spread your legs to sit comfortably makes me believe they dont have to deal with that. Just know you dont speak for everyone.

It's pretty fucking obvious that everyone who is that adamantly in favor of "man spreading" is either insecure and parroting nonsense because they believe fake news about ball size and scrotal structure that they have previous heard/read... or they are just anti-feminist because they stupidly associate the act with women complaining about it for... whatever that argument even is when they complain.

That being said, there are dudes out there sitting with their legs spread at a 45 degree angle. That's annoying for literally everyone, man or woman. I was on a plane last week and the dude in the seat next to me tried to go for the wide-spread. I politely told him to keep his legs confined to his chair and the area in front of it.

Like there is typically enough room to keep your legs apart enough for your balls without moving into other people's areas. It's not that hard.

I wanted to post about this.

I take public transportation every day. Bus and subway.

Women are just as guilty as men. They may not "manspread" but they certainly use other means to encroach on personal space. Like bags and hand bags.

This is notorious on the bus where they put their pocket books in a seat then give you a stink eye when you ask if you can have the seat.

LOL this is actually the logic used in the premise for the dystopian fiction Harrison Bergeron, where everyone has to wear handicap devices to guarantee equality throughout society and curb society a certain way.

This is stupid lol. I've had more issues with other females taking up public seating anyway, and if someone is spreading wide enough that it's taking up said space, ask them to budge a bit. Most people are oblivious about being an inconvenience, I find, not malicious.
