I was wondering when they'd start to actually market Mario Maker 2 in a significant way. Cool!

I think I got my fill with the Wii U version, but I could be swayed.

well... they are free. Any schmo can get the entire nes collection, which is just a few mbs in seconds. That's the model nintendo is competing against. If you want to pay 20 dollars a year for whats essentially the value of a newgrounds flash game that's fine, and thats your choice, but personally I can't imagine a worse value

I already pay for my internet and I have no interest in paying a second time to allow any (much less all) of my consoles to use it, thank you. (Nintendo's offerings beyond the access itself are particularly scant compared to their competitors, but they've adjusted the price accordingly so if you're just focusing on that, it's hard to find fault.)

If we want to talk about purely objective value, there's value in the online play added to the games, the ease of having them instantly on a handheld without having to set up an emulator, find roms, and get them onto the phone or whatever, and then there's value in stuff like Tetris 99.

Obviously anybody can decide if that's worth $20 a month to them, but to act like there's objectively nothing for that $20 is kinda dumb.

its not about full subscription to do anything.

its about full subscription to play user created levels.

I want people to actually play my levels. Spending hours to fine tune a level just to have no one play it was so disheartening.

Eh, that might work for some games. I agree, in that I've played some mobile games that use only left, right, and essentially an A and B, and they did play better than expected. But throwing in Up and Down, along with the games that require Select and Start. That might be a little rough.

this metaphor doesn't scan on a lot of levels

1) the front office buys those candies
2) the candies are very cheap to produce
3) your alternative - if you actually decided to purchase the candies - would actually be less of a value than nintendo online. you should actually say "pay 20 dollars a year for all you can eat peppermint circles" - which is actually a very good deal, as a large bag of those costs $7 (I actually buy them for my office)

I don't think the online subscription will be required to play user-created levels, but downloading other people's levels for offline use will probably be locked behind the subscription. Uploading levels will almost certainly be locked behind the subscription.

There could be problems if stages created for Super Mario Maker 1 were transferable. Some of the cool tricks that people were able to do in the first game were accomplished by exploiting the enemy/block/item limits. If these limits were increased in Super Mario Maker 2 due to being on a more powerful system, it would break levels that were created in the first game and possibly result in levels that are impossible to clear.

If levels from Super Mario Maker 1 can be transferred over, the creator should have to play through their level again to make sure it can still be cleared in Super Mario Maker 2 before they can upload it.

Only reason it wouldn't save you money is if you reeeeally didn't want the online service.

its like the online service was free then

if you intended to buy two full price games anyway (which you probably will since first party Nintendo games barely get discounted) its pure upside

Worded another way: the voucher makes the online subscription pay for itself right away! You buy two games and you got a free online subscription.

I never got to play SMM1 but I believe I am in for this as soon as I understand the voucher-deal.

I currently do not have online service with my Switch. If I get SMM2 bundled with a year of online service for $69.99, then get Super Mario Odyssey for $59.99, becoming $129.98 total...the vouchers will drop that total to $109.98. I think that much makes sense.

Did I understand right that you need to already have to have the online service to get the vouchers though? If so, I can buy a month or three months first, whatever.

Are there other opportunities to look out for here?
