I live in such a place. I also make considerably more than 100k. I do have a lengthy commute though. 50 minute train ride + 25 minute walk each way.

If I lived in the city itself my rent would be around $1300 but no commute. Right now it's $850 a month but with a commute.

Same except I get to go home/grocery shopping at lunch. Took a truck from work and got 8 sheets of OSB during my lunch break at Home Depot earlier.

I spend more than that for just my wife and I, but only because I can. If I have to trim costs and still eat well, you can eat for half of that with 2 people.

Doe the people scoffing at the rent and the phone bill, my phone bill is only 45 per month and my half of the rent is only 700.

However I am still on my moms cell plan, we just split the bill 4 ways. And I split rent with my brother. All Im saying is that its possible.

A more realistic budget:

$70 unlimited phone usage
$50 home internet
$250 food
$150 eating out
$850 rent (can be less if you have room mates)
$50 gas
$50 car insurance
$50 utilities not included in rent

Comes out to $1,520 monthly spend before any debt repayment or any budget cutting. Throw in some individual insurance through an employer for $150 a month. Throw in some student loan repayment and even a car note and you're still below the total in the OP.

Depends where you live.

A decent two bedroom apartment here in Omaha in a good location is only like 900 a month.

Hell even the high end ones in the heart of downtown are only like 1200

Shit hole parts of nice(r) cities have rents like this, too. You'll probably have to deal with 4-5 breakins every year though.

Actually as I look at the total picture, most of that (other than donations) is actually very close to what I pay monthly. If I lived a lone though, my rent would probably be in the $1100 range or so.

I keep saying to myself that it's just temporary and that I'll move into the city but every time I'm about to pull the trigger I go for a hike through the nice forest trails and by the little lakes out here where I currently live. And I also think about the extra money I can pocket.

Taking the train makes it bearable because I can read or do work on the train for most of the commute.

Here you can get good internet for around $50. Won't be super high-speed and it'll have a data cap on it but for a single person or a small household it's more than fine. Also you can include Netflix, PSN, Health Insurance, 401k deductions, and a train pass and still come out below the total in the OP. That budget is fucked up lol.
