Will have a soundtrack by Buckethead, but I think that's just for the boxed collectors edition.

SIGIL is a free megawad for the original 1993 DOOM created by John Romero. It contains nine single-player and nine deathmatch levels. The free megawad will be released in mid- February 2019 and requires players own the original 1993 registered version of DOOM in order to play. SIGIL is the spiritual successor to the fourth episode of DOOM, and picks up where the original left off.

In addition to the free megawad, SIGIL also releases in two limited edition fan boxes created by Limited Run Games. The fan boxes feature music by metal guitar legend Buckethead, including a custom song written expressly for SIGIL, and cover art by Christopher Lovell whose iconic, detailed work has been featured on numerous metal albums. (Note: The free megawad does not ship with Bucketheads music or Christopher Lovells art.)

Well, that bolded bit answers the last part of my original post.

Guilty - ordered the standard boxed version not too long ago. The soundtrack could be promising.

As far as the bolded part, I'm confused. Right on the site included in the box. "A 16GB 3 1/2-inch floppy disk themed USB that includes the free megawad data and extras."

I think they're clarifying that the mod will be released as a free megawad, which will have no extras, but the option is there to purchase the boxed version which will come with the soundtrack and the art.

As in, I think they legally can't sell the mod maybe? So they have to release a free version. But they can sell the soundtrack and shit and say "includes a free mod for DOOM"

Well I am hyped as fuck but $166.00? As much as I love Doom I might consider just downloading the WAD instead.

Huh, not a bad point. He probably doesn't have rights to it. Somewhere it says you need the original registered game.

eh... it's just some levels, that's not really anything to get that excited about. as far as I know John Carmack is *way* more the brains behind DOOM than John Romero is. Romero must need money or something.

Carmack made the game engine, Romero was the person who designed the original levels. Even after Romero left ID, Carmack still was responsible for the game engines and needed other people to design the game levels. I mean I am way more of a fan of Carmack over Romero but even I admit that Romero is way more qualified then Carmack to make new DOOM WAD files.

Considering the WAD itself is free and only the physical edition costs money, I doubt it is about money that much and is more of a passion project.

A 9 level megawad is hardly a "spiritual successor."

So this is PC-only?

Romero stated he didn't want to touch the new Dooms even if they asked him to because there are people that can do his work better than he can since the level editor released back in the day.

If you haven't seen this, it's worth a watch.
