With fewer matches to discuss yo and I decided it would be a good opportunity to do the first Four Man Pod of the season, and we injected some fresh blood into The Show with first time guests greatone and MetalMind. What we didn't realize is what a historic week this would be- but it made for quite the episode!

http://board8.speedrunwiki.com/interviews/theshow/20181130-TheShowEP08.mp3

* a Viking Funeral for the Noble Nine

* taking a deep dive into WHAT HAPPENED?! to Mega Man and Snake

* introducing a fun new segment named "Delightful Creativity, or Pic Sabotage?"

* picking the Stars and Turds of the Legends bracket

* predictions for how the next two rounds of Losers will play out

I thought our plan to bring in some fresh new perspectives played out quite well with some surprising new insights this week, I hope you'll agree!

I was surprised that a new episode went up today rather than wait until Losers Round 1 ends to discuss all of Winners/Losers Round 1.

Downloading this episode this right now. I'll listen to it sometime after the start of the next matches.

I obviously haven't listened yet because this topic is seconds old, but everyone knows I love the sprite round. If anyone thinks I like it for sabotage/trolling reasons then they're just flat-out wrong.

Listening now!

I'll forgive you if you submit a OG sonic sprite.. Everyone loves chubby sonic.

I just wanted to repeat how I never expected the chance to guest-star on The Show, and I really appreciate Ng so generously granting me the opportunity. If it weren't for you, we wouldn't even have The Show, let alone so smoothly ran. Maybe there would be something to take its place, but not with the same consistency, both schedule-wise and especially in terms of quality. Also, Yo, The Show just wouldn't be the same without you. Like Ng, you delivered high quality insights as always, and who could forget those classic rants! And greatone, you offered the freshest, arguably most compelling takes of the night. Thank you to all three of you for making last night so fun. I think we all agreed that those almost three hours just flew right by. Hopefully all our listeners feel the same!

Also, I like the coincidence of greatone and I being two of the three Gurus who picked Kefka to win his division, plus neither of us picking Link to win the contest.

Second on the wiki being awesome. I've been into contests for a while, but I only really became a fan of them when I red about their lore, about stuff like Noble Nine and past contests. It's really cool to be into something that has its own meta like that. Makes it feel like an actual sport.

sprites are fine, but I'm not okay with them having to be of the characters first appearance. Like Solid Snake should get a MGS1 pic since that's where he got most his fame(i think). Ganondorf idk..but OoT gdorf just looks way better. Can you imagine CV3 alucard going up? I think that happened in the past.. i forgot.

Yeah, this was a hell of a lot of fun to do, and as I mentioned after the show concluded, I think Ngamer deserves an all-time MVP award for making this podcast a consistent highlight of the last few contest seasons.

Mega Man/Pikachu still has the asterisk (Mega Man would have won without double votes)
Unfortunately, Snake/Zelda was a totally legit breaking of the Noble Nine (besides mayyyyyyybe a little rallying; don't think it was clearly enough to flip anything, though).

As yoblazer mentioned, vote totals in 2007 were around 6 to 7 times higher than they are right now (based on the raw vote totals of this contest). Crono's loss to Vincent to 2007 happened during the height of our vote totals, and there were a lot of younger voters who probably never played Chrono Trigger.

Regarding the match picture controversy - The sprite pictures seem to be hurting our vote totals, as the previous set of matches easily set a record for lowest vote totals in the entire contest. The previous record low was about 26000 votes per match on Day 2 of the contest and this was the first time we got less than 28000 votes in any match since Day 2 of the contest.

My theory of the low vote totals seems to be validated by today's matches suffering from vote totals that are currently as bad as yesterday's matches at this point in time.

Regarding the discussion about Mario's strength being very flexible and going up and down depending on how popular Nintendo currently is:

We've kind of already seen that the site doesn't blindly defend Nintendo all of the time despite the perception that this site is NintendoFAQs and we have drones swarming the site. When Nintendo screwed up in E3 2008 with Wii Music being their big game announcement in their E3 press conference, it changed the entire course of Nintendo and the Wii on this site. The Wii fell off the map after that and the site started hating on Nintendo again, showing that we won't put up with terrible crap from Nintendo.

Oh my GOSH! Just got home from watching Ralph Wreck the Internet and I can't believe my eyes. Three takeaways

- good thing I had to leave before SB uploaded the art, I'd have lowered my Snake pick even further

- yuuuuuuuup, going to have to double down HARD on my Turd of the Week choice!

- it's 2005 all over again, start up that Samus > Mario hype train!

1. Welcome to the Show, greatone and MetalMind!

2. Yo: "Alucard or Auron - who would be the favorite here?" Well, after today...

3. Mega Man did in fact win when you take out the Registered Voter boost, which I think is a better goalpost-move than any of the other excuses people have made over the years. Of course than Snake happened, rendering the whole thing moot.

4. Jay Solano was a fun time.

The only thing that prevents me from trusting the Tifa/Sephiroth result as evidence that Samus would beat Mario is the match pic factor in today's matches. We have another day of sprites and I could see Sephiroth being hurt more than Tifa by these sprite pictures. This throws off Tifa's strength relative to Sephiroth and makes Tifa/Sephiroth unreliable in projecting Samus > Mario based on the Samus/Tifa and Mario/Sephiroth matches. There's also the possibility of rSFF in Tifa/Sephiroth, which can also throw off the projections for Samus/Mario.

5. I definitely had a "Noble Nine can't lose" mental barrier going into this bracket. I was skeptical of them, but it's hard to pick against them when the bigger bracket-busters in 2013 were supercharged Pokemon with favorable conditions that weren't necessarily going to be repeated. Now we have Zelda and Tifa beating Snake and Sephiroth clean (and Pikachu coming within like 0.1% of Mega Man with the registered voter boost removed) and no one is safe anymore.

6. I like the metaphor of the Noble Nine being boss battles. It wouldn't have mattered as much with increased total voters, but the GameFAQs faithful still around these days are very contest-aware. I could easily see Snake or Mega Man or maybe even Sephiroth turning those matches around if the match was held in Round 1.

That was something you said near the end of the episode, and it was the first sign that you were referring to me. Once you started talking analytical and robotic mind, it was pretty clear at that point.

As for why SBAllen wants picsmiths to submit both a foreground and a background instead of just one image, I think it's likely because the picture displays differently depending on whether you are on a computer or on a phone.

I know on my phone, the background image is trimmed a bit since everything's so small, whereas I get the full picture on my laptop. Having separate foregrounds and backgrounds probably makes it easier for SBAllen.

We've dealt with that issue before in Games/Years, where we had to center everything in the image according to a guideline image so it would good in all formats. There wasn't really a reason to not do it this year.

I'm not claiming that you're submitting Bacondorf or Solid Shit to hurt Ganondorf or Snake or whatever, I'm saying that you know they're terrible pics that will hurt them significantly and you've decided that the personal satisfaction you get from doing sprite pics outweighs the fundamental unfairness of using them for some characters.

Our original assumption of Snake/Zelda being a legitimate breaking of the Noble Nine might have to be reconsidered because Zen posted a screenshot on Discord showing several hentai rallies on Reddit that all had at least 100 points or more. Zen forgot to censor the image URLs in the screenshot, so I can't repost the original screenshot without getting modded for it.

Here's an edited version with the image URLs censored out:
