A well written protagonist that talks is better than a silent protagonist.

But a silent protagonist is better than a poorly written protagonist that talks.

I don't mind them? Depends on the game. Like I have never thought Chrono Trigger would be a better game if Crono could speak.

Definitely prefer voice acting, it always takes me out of the story when NPCs are talking to me or something bonkers is happening and I'm just standing there with the blankest expression ever.

Yep, that was one of my issues with Pokemon Gen VII, I think the protagonist's expression changes once in the entire game when Nihilego first appears?

I find myself caring less about the presence of a speaking protagonist as time goes on and video game narratives are told in more ways. I don't think Gone Home was harmed by having a (mostly) silent protagonist. A similar narrative adventure game, Firewatch, was absolutely made better for the relationship its two main characters forged. So the last one, I guess? The quality of the protagonist goes to the quality of writing overall, which I find myself more interested in.

Silent protags are boring. In general I don't want the protagonist (of anything, whether it's a game/book/anime/etc.) to be a generic good-guy everyman, or the straight man to a more colorful cast. I'm spending the most time with the protag; I want them to be distinct and memorable and have narrative agency.

So it's not really about "Does the MC have dialogue" so much as "is the MC a legit character rather than a lifeless avatar."

Generally I don't like it or at best am neutral towards it.

The major exception is probably Amaterasu from Okami since it mostly makes sense in the context of the game that she is silent.

I also like the Persona 3 protagonist somewhat, though a lot of that is due to him having somewhat of an implied personality.
