Video game movies have a reputation for being not great - from the likes of World of Warcraft to Assassin's Creed, we've seen Hollywood adaptations of some of the biggest franchises fall flat on the big screen.

But that doesn't stop fan appetite for massive franchises getting the movie treatment. The latest series to be thrust into the spotlight is Metroid - thanks to a surprise Halloween costume reveal by Brie Larson.

The American actress - widely known for her upcoming role in Disney's Captain Marvel and a starring role in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World - wore the costume for Halloween and has since revealed she'd be keen on making a Metroid film.

You can see Larson dressed as Zero Suit Samus in the Instagram post below.

Twitter user Simon Hernandez-Arthur tweeted ".@brielarson dressing up as Samus Aran for Halloween is as close as we're going to get to a Metroid movie, isn't it?"

And a reply from Larson herself noted: "I hope not. I want to make that movie."

It's only a notation of interest from the actress, but that's been enough to see these things make it to the big screen before.

Will we see the Nintendo franchise make it to cinemas? We can only hope so.

At least as Samus Aran, we wont be exposed to her feet.

Like, why is anyone even acting like she is anything? Literally all she has done noteworthy is Captain Marvel and even that seems suspect thus far.

Honestly, that works better than trying to adapt games with more complex plots. There's more room and freedom to work with, you just need to hire actually good writers who have even a vague idea of what Metroid is, which will be the difficult part.

Examples?

because off the top of my head, Bloodrayne and Hitman both have fairly simple plots that still produced horrible movies.

Yeah, no. Among other things, Room is the biggest thing in her career right now.

With that said, Samus have no personality anyway, so looks wise this would be right up her alley.

That's why the stipulation that they need good writers/directors is there. Bloodrayne was literally Uwe Boll, and he's fucking atrocious.

Silent Hill honestly wasn't that bad a movie IMO, and while yes, the Silent Hill games have a more in-depth plot, the film was more an homage to the overall tone, style, and general themes of the games than any one specific SH story.

Wasn't there some director not too long ago who expressed wanting to do a Metroid film? He sounded like he was very familiar with the games and went into details about how he would do it, and iirc, CE was really digging his idea.
I can't remember who it was but I was down with that pitch.

Edit: It was the Kong: Skull Island guy.

I have a pitch for a Metroid movie. They'll never let me do it. It's too crazy... It legitimately would be [Samus] alone. It would be a little bit of her talking to herself. As soon as they introduce other talking characters in those games, to me it loses everything. You put her alone and it's almost got a little bit more to do with the silence of a movie like Drive. Like the quietness and having it be like a real, intense mood piece, but mixed with sci-fi.

like early on she sees a platform she can't reach and says "i wish i had a double jump" and then in a boss fight she gets double jump and goes back to it and winks at the camera

Samus Returns was definitely a playable video game with little appreciable story that I enjoyed and have no particular care to go back to.

There's a lot of work for Metroid Prime 4 to do to walk back the story that was Other M, if so they choose to go in that direction.

Eh, not a fan of people who think she absolutely needs to be alone. She's a Federation soldier in all but name so NOT having anyone else around, ever, would be weirder.

She can have some interaction with others, sure, but I agree the majority of the movie should be her alone, maybe 70-80%.

Make it a sci-fi thriller character piece and you got something potentially dope as fuck.

You can go ahead and tell me my opinion is wrong if you want to.

But I mean look, this topic is about a Metroid movie, which is going to be all story and no gameplay. The suggestion that a Metroid movie could "ruin" Metroid is implying that the story of Metroid isn't already in a state of ruin, with which I cite Other M as the root cause.

Suggesting a story-light remake of the second game "saves" Metroid is dodging the point of this topic.

And citing a game we have literally no information about in the same breath doesn't help either.

Shed have to ditch the Power Suit at some point, though. And theyd probably only use it for a few action scenes just because itd be easier/cheaper to have her walking around in the Zero Suit. So, no, whoever plays Samus needs an ass.

True, but a majority of light novels end up being adapted into anime and manga anyways. American movies based off of Japanese anime/manga/video games can probably be pulled off. The right people just need to be at the helm.

Samus is supposed to be like 6 ft tall and built like a pro athlete. Brie is 5'7" and average build. If a Metroid movie is ever made, the director would be better off grabbing a tall blonde from SI Swimsuit than casting Brie for the role as camera tricks can only go so far.
