I've mentioned it a million times but I'm gonna do it again here

Part of the reason why FFXII was so bad was because there was no sense of purpose, it sends you from dungeon to dungeon with very little reward, only to do it again and again

the thing is, EVERY game is basically like this, but it completely fails with immersion. I'm AWARE of what the game is doing, and that shouldn't be the case. I should be swept up with the story and the characters or the gameplay and shit. Instead, "we beat this dungeon, LETS GO ACROSS THE WORLD MAP ON FOOT AND DO THE NEXT ONE NOW LOL"

Late 80s RPGs get a pass, like FF1

you're telling me MH is a game where theres barely any story, you just go place to place killing the monsters with barely any purpose

MH isn't really an RPG, unless you're talking about Monster Hunter Stories for 3DS which does have a story and the whole point of it is to be MH as an RPG

Monster hunter is literally pure gameplay.

It has one of the best action combat systems in gaming. If you don't enjoy the gameplay there is no point in playing it.

Trying to compare it to a traditional rpg, or expecting anything similar to a traditional rpg is a mistake. It has elements of rpg games (character progression via gear upgrades and...thats basically it) but it is not an rpg. People like to call it an action rpg but it honestly has more similarities to fighting games than it does rpgs

Both of these 100%. Monster Hunter is pure video game greatness. If your first priority when playing a video game isn't playing a video game, then MH might not be up your alley. The gameplay is absurdly fun and addictive, though.

It's a great game. There's one game in the series with a story that goes slightly beyond more excuse plot levels, 4U (arguably World too but World's story is dumb and out of place), but generally speaking the series is about nothing but killing monsters. I'm not sure how you managed to find FFXII as a comparable when they have literally nothing in common besides both being video games.

Soul Calibur 5 is the best game in the series as far as gameplay goes, but I would actually say it might be the worst as far as content goes. I consider it a bad game overall

Sure, something like Soul Calibur one doesn't have anything to it either but it's a product of its time.

There has been advancements and what we can expect in games and whether or not it's worth your time and or money

Actually, Monster Hunter World does have some semblance of a story and it's easily the low point of the game. I came here to kill monsters, just let me do it!

the story is always about you going on monster genocide with fellow hunters

these monsters don't go down easy because they know they'll be skinned and carved up so they are extra ferocious and can usually kill you in 2 hits and you can only die 3 times before you get kicked out of Jurassic Park

There are plenty of reasons to not like monhun, but this is some pretty weird logic.

Monhun's combat is so incredibly good that, if you're into technical pve combat, there are few games that even come close. Dark souls/bloodborne get thrown around a lot in that mix, and those have the "more" you are probably alluding to, and are definitely great games, but they feel radically different and dont satisfy the exact same urge.

Monhun is, essentially, a boss rush game. Each game can easily provide well over one hundred hours of exhilarating action, with very little fat to chew on outside of that. And that fat is generally front loaded (GU, the game you have, is one of the worst offenders of this in the series unfortunately).

Sometimes you want to explore a world, get immersed in the story/characters/whatever. There are plenty of games for that. Plenty of great games. Sometimes, you just want to fuck up a huge boss without having to jump through a bunch of hoops. There aren't as many games that do that well, and almost none that do it with the quality than monster hunter does. I can't actually think of a similar type game with combat anywhere close to as good as monhun is.

Maybe you aren't into that, and that's fine. But "games need to be more these days" is a pretty lousy reason to critique it with. Being more would also probably sacrifice some amount of the incredible combat and addicting gameplay loop that is integral to the experience. The only games that come close to this are the soulsborne games and their ilk and fans of both will generally tell you monhun's combat is better.

Monster Hunter GU has tons and tons of content. Like, to the point that almost every other game is massively lacking by comparison. It just doesn't have a few hours of bad writing mixed in with the gameplay.

I've put almost 2000 hours into monster hunter 4u. A 3ds game. 300 into gu. 500 into world. Another 500 across other games in the series.

The combat is so good that it is literally the only thing it needs. In fact, most people will tell you that the parts of the game that *aren't* combat (which, by proportion, is not that much) are annoying because all they want to do is hunt more monsters.

Even mh world, which fans critique for lacking content, has well over a hundred hours easily.

Content is not the issue.

Again, maybe it isn't your thing. And that is fine. Not everyone likes everything. But that doesn't make it any lesser of a game for it. Monster hunter is, almost inarguably, better at what it does than any other game in the same style.

Try the gameplay, if you like it then you'll easily put 100s of hours in, and if you don't you won't.

@STElNER just to be clear, it definitely isn't a fighting game. It just has as much or more in common with them as it does rpgs.

If you need something to compare it to, think boss rush dark souls with better/deeper weapons and combos
