Games will never have stories as good as movies, so they should stop trying to be like them.

The big issue I have with the story is that it's in direct contradiction with the apocalyptic setting. It doesn't make sense that you're busy shooting up a room filled with people when zombies are lurking, preying on you, right outside the door. Given how Naughty Dog isn't all that diverse in their gameplay, it's not surprising they'd amp up the shooter aspect in their game. If this was a movie, and they maintained the amount of human killing, the storyline would have been chewed up and spit out.

Nah. There's plenty of post-apocalyptic fiction with a meaningful plot out there.

I love the Metal Gear series, but that story would be treated like a joke in any other medium.
It's about a spy who has to fight a bunch of super powered terrorist to fight his clone brother and there's a bunch of dinosaur mechs that shoot nukes. It sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon.

Nier Automata works well because it takes advantage of the video game medium.

I don't think it would hold up as well as a movie.

No one praises Marvel movies for their story. Their praised for being fun fan service movies.

Exactly this.

It's the same for games like Life is Strange, you take the interactivity and decision making away from the consumer and the whole experience becomes less intimate and impactful because it no longer involves you, you're just an observer as opposed to an agent of change. Movie versions of these titles would only ever play second-fiddle -- more for non-gamers than anyone who had actually played it themselves.

Mgs2 was in the Smithsonian for its use of postmodernism

MGS3's story, worldbuilding and character development could not be accomplished in any other medium as a result of the codec system and crucial moments like making the player pull the trigger on the final boss

They're hammy for movies but it's really wrong to compare a movie story to a game story 1:1. That's as bad as comparing a book to a movie. Games create good game stories by using the medium to their advantage.

I haven't played the TLOU. Does TLOU take advantage of the fact that it's a videogame?

The story is shit. It is a lightweight version of Telltale's The Walking Dead. Joel is unrelatable, unlikable and unredeemable. Ellie is annoying as fuck that talks too much. They're not engaging enough for me. It's just people who are thrown together and is naturally bonded.
