RCA needs to release a 480p 27" retro tube television with composite, component, VGA, and S-video to play Dreamcast, N64, SNES etc.
I'd be all over that.

No thanks. It would be cool instead if they invented flat-panel TVs that make retro games look exactly like they did on CRTs

I played GBA games via Gamecube on an oldschool HDTV via S-Video... you could see the pixels!

no thanks.

crt tv's are a thing of the past, and it's a very, very, very, incredibly good thing that they're obsolete.

I miss my Samsung 27" CRT TV I used to have. Do any of you even remember how much better older games looked on a good CRT?
Old games look like ass on HDTVs.

Yes, I have a CRT because retro games look better on them, but it would be stupid for them to start manufacturing them again for that reason. Maybe we'll get some improvements that make them look better on HDTVs, but I'm not holding my breath. If anything, we'll probably see them stop putting those inputs on TVs, but I hope not. That will be a sad day, but I assume cheap HDMI adapters would become popular.

Examples? The scanline filter on the SNES Classic is nice for adding some anti-aliasing to certain games, but I don't like the lines. It's not like every CRT had those (or at least not that visibly).

Maybe I just need to play around more with the sharpness settings, if there are any. I think that setting is only available on non-HDMI inputs.

I mean id like tv manufacturers to start caring about refresh rate and input lag before putting efforts towards CRT tvs for gaming.

We need regular TVs for gaming to be cheap.

Most people who make TVs with high refresh and low input lag also shove all sorts of other smart tech in there that your gaming system already has built in thats jacks up the price (and spies on you) or only makes them with HUGE screens which comes with a host of other problems including price.

Rich gamers shouldnt be the only ones to get no screen tear smooth clear no controller lag gaming, and yes for many action and shooting games it does give you a huge advantage over competition using standard mass produced HDTVs

I don't really see how the TV size is a problem. You can get 50" HDTVs for the price you'd be looking at for a 27" CRT years ago, and it still takes up less space by volume.

CRT's are fucking terrible. Hated them when they were the norm. Hate them now.

But I do want some old PC's.

And some TV's with s-video and component would be cool. TV's these days say Look! 12 HDMI inputs! Dude, I don't give a fuck. I only need 1 HDMI. Give me some variety.

I could maybe get behind that, but CRT's themselves are ****ing awful. Bulky, heavy, extremely imbalanced, and fragile so you have to be careful with them while trying to work around the other challenges in moving them. I'll stick with TV's I can comfortably pick up with one hand if they aren't bigger than my arm span.

I accept that CRTs have their share of technical issues, but my old consoles still look best on them. I, er, took the step of stockpiling a few from the local Goodwill back in the day (less than $20 a pop, and all in good shape), and I still have my old Panasonic from my university days (the VCR still works!), so I'm still set on CRTs for a good while. Would be nice to see a new model, though, for us retro fans.

No reason we couldnt improve CRTV tech. There is just no reason for anybody to invest in it.

We have a habit as humans of dropping one form of tech entirely when a potential replacement presents itself, but its usually based on market desires and less about making things work perfectly.

And usually, if there is merit in the old tech, it'll be reintroduced. See: Record players. CRT's, however, have no redeeming features except making old games look better, which doesn't really amount to that much (especially where many options for emulating said games are also capable of emulating playing them on a CRT). From a distribution side, manufacturers and distributors would also prefer to steer clear of them, since flat panel TV's pack and ship so much more easily (lighter, thinner, more balanced).

Indeed, TC.

We'll just have to wait for the market to mature and understand that widescreen, flatscreen, "smart", HD only garbage with less cable standards compatibility than my cat's litterbox and ugly upscaled laggy stretched out image with flat color depth simply isn't good enough.

Until they decide they want to make real high quality SD CRT TVs again for humane prices (rather than the ridiculous prices they're more likely to put on them if they ever smart up and make any at all, becuase they think only rich people want real TVs even though they're SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to make than anything HD and flatscreen+widescreen related ever will be) we're just gonna have to take our money and give it to the secondhand market, their loss, our loss, secondhand sellers win.

It would be so expensive to start making those things again. Its not like releasing games on a new platform. This would involve factories and complex, fragile parts. Imean.. its been so long since I had one that I don't even have a place to put it.
