it's an "open world" first-person shooter from Ubisoft that follows practically the same "open world" formula as AssCreed. big map with towers you climb to open the map, lots of sidequests / map markers, etc. there's an emphasis on scavenging the environment (plants, animals, etc) to craft upgrades and such and it also has that "play how you want" mentality.

i really liked the 3rd game and the 80s themed spin-off "Blood Dragon" but I haven't bothered with subsequent entries into the series because they seem too same-y.

The first Far Cry was a more linear game with large outdoor levels you could tackle in various ways. Far Cry 2 was a gritty open world game with many difficulty-increasing mechanics (weapons and vehicles breaking down, malaria, saves only in safe houses) that created an unique, harrowing atmosphere. Far Cry 3 started the Assassins' Creed imitation and making the player feel like a superhuman.
