Long story short a plow (or some driver but pretty sure it was a plow) ran into my car and caused a dent. Apparently its way worse than I thought; the dent is on a part of my car that cant be replaced so...

To top it off, my car is already rusting and looks like it will just get worse if not fixed

Bought this car just last year :(

So don't fix it. Who cares what your car looks like as long as it works?

Why would it cost money? Do you not have insurance?

To be fair, if your car looks like a total shitheap, it can actually increase the odds that police will pull you over for minor infractions they might otherwise have let you get away with.

Youre right this was wrong

Basically the plow hit my quarter panel. The cost is ~22% of what the car is worth now. If I caused the issue myself in an accident I wouldnt be mad. But someone got away with a hit and run and unfortunately its costly. Ill just save the money and pay out in the summer

Going through your insurance can cause your rates to go up which could potentially end costing him more in the long run.

For smaller things like a small dent like he thought it was, it's better to not report it and just pay it out of pocket.

What car do you have? You could get a carbon fibre quarter panel for that.

He's not at fault, his rates will not go up. Pay the deductible, usually $200 to $500, and get it fixed. It's a hit and run, so you will have to make a police report, usually free to do.

You would have to have a police report or some kind of proof. But even then, his rates could still possibly go up. They could say he wasn't careful or parked wrong or whatever. He could possibly face higher rates...

That's not how it works. If you are in an accident then your rate will go up as you have increased your history of needing to claim, if it's your fault then you'll get a motoring offense too and that will increase it further.

No, that is how it works.
My fucking car is a battering ram for people, most recently a fucking senator drove into it in the parking lot. Since I am not in the car, and a parked car is never ever at fault, my rates don't go up. I just have to keep going back to the police station over and over.

If your insurance company raises your rates because someone else hit your car that you weren't even in, change insurance companies. You accidentally bought into a scam.

This year I reached 35% discount on my car insurance for safe driving. 15 years without an accident :D

Idk... that just doesn't sound right. Like, I feel after a certain amount of accidents, your rate will go up. As an insurance company, I can only believe so much before I have to raise your rates a little... Otherwise, the insurance company starts losing money... and they won't do that...

This...

You don't make a claim with your own insurance company when someone strikes your vehicles, guys... You get that person's insurance information, call your own company and give it to them so they can start their claimant process. Call the police if the person refuses to give you their info; in most states you're supposed to call the police regardless.

Holy crap, bros. Have you guys been filing with your own insurance company when in an accident that wasn't your fault for years or something?

Edit: And if the person doesn't have insurance then you definitely have to call the police so you can eventually get a civil judgement against them to pay for your damages. L2adult, guys. Not knowing how the world works can be extremely expensive :(

Well according to this link
https://www.thebalance.com/can-a-not-at-fault-claim-raise-my-insurance-rates-527469

They are not supposed to raise your rates... if you got the at fault parties information.
For hit an run, some might increase your rates if you have a bad history.
The site also gives the same advice I give, find a new insurer if they do this to you.

This
Maybe, if you have been shown to get lots of accidents, even all being non fault, your rates will go up. But a few wont touch it. Though if that was the case, they may look into insurance fraud

What I'm trying to say is that if you have multiple hit and runs(where you can't get the other party's info), I don't think the company is just going to keep paying without eventually raising rates. Or they may drop you. They can't just keep losing money. Or else everyone would be doing this...
