Obviously sometimes a chapter will be really short, but on average what's your preference? Long chapters with breaks, short chapters of like 1000 words, what?

10-20 minutes of reading time

not sure how many words that is

I don't really notice chapter length unless they're super short. Which can be executed well -- like Challenger Deep has a lot of 2-3 page chapters that it uses to good effect -- but can also be gimmicky/annoying.

Long enough to capture the point of the chapter.

Like there's no arbitrary limit/goal when it comes to chapter word count.

that's a good question

unfortunately, i can't really answer. i'm usually reading on a kindle and somehow the chapters get lost and i have no idea where they start and stop

as long as the writing is good and things flow together i don't tend to notice. as long as it doesn't feel like things are being stretched out or squished to fit a specific format. sorry i can't be more helpful

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

i like to be able to finish at least one chapter every time i sit down and read, but naturally the quality of writing matters much more than the length of a chapter

I don't ever pay much attention to chapter breaks, so I feel like it doesn't matter. Usually I read in large chunks.

Oh yeah another thought: It doesn't matter so much if you just have a single POV. But if you have multiple POV characters and switch between them with each chapter, then longer chapters are better. There should be time for the reader to get situated and get invested in whatever's going on with that particular narrator.

I usually forget that chapters exist unless some are stylistically very short, like in some Stephen King books.

Length isn't the issue. It's whether or not you're breaking up chapters in a logical way.
