Denial is a hell of a thing. When confronted with the choice to subconsciously make an excuse/discredit a claim as opposed to accepting the guilt of holding terrible beliefs, people will go with the former in almost every case.

Yes, but that's not what the article says. It doesn't "he's the admin of a group with some white supremacist members," it says he's the admin of a white supremacist group. Reddit has white supremacist members too, but it'd be ridiculous to call that a white supremacist site.

So it is fake news bullshit, and it's clear why guys like hutton needs to make excuses in advance.
