She's been having some balance issues lately, coupled with a gradually worsening tremor in her right hand. Got her in for an MRI yesterday, and the radiologist is saying its very likely she has MS. We will be seeing a specialist and getting her in for a contrast MRI in order to confirm, but the chances of it being something else are pretty slim.

Honestly, given the news we were expecting, I was actually relieved when I found out. She has a family history of Parkinson's, grew up on wellwater, and her symptoms were exactly what you would expect for early onset. Her mother died of brain cancer at the age of 38. She has family with a myriad of other disorders, all of which have far worse prognoses than MS.

But seriously, what are the fucking odds?

Im in a weird mode today. The news is not great, and having anything confirmed is obviously devastating, but at the same time i cannot help but feel relief. MS is totally treatable, and of all the neurological disorders out there, MS being auto immune seems to mean that there are new treatments coming out every other day.

My mom has it, and i have seen first hand how it can effect someone. She can barely walk now, and somedays she can barely do anything.

Crappy fact: Alberta has the highest MS rate in the world.

My girlfriend has MS as well.
She can suddenly lose her balance at random and the vision in her left eye is mostly blurry.
The meds she takes are expensive as fuck though. Just one small box of her meds is roughly around $1500.

But yeah, MS can be a real bitch when you get older.
IIRC I read somewhere that there was one person who was cured from his/her MS with stem cells I think?

Yeah, an Ms diagnosis was way worse even as few as 10 years ago. They've made some pretty significant advances.

Just as a point of reference, I was diagnosed about 4 years ago, and I've been symptom free for the past 3 and a half years

man, that's great. it's really bad for my dad. he's hospitalized twice a year or more for his to get steroid treatments as he has flare ups with new lesions. and he's gotten guillane barre now too.

he's fallen and broken his back twice in the past 6 years. he fell and broke his hip about 3 years ago and has to use a walker permanently now.

That's probably because the further you are born from the equator the more likely you are to get it. Sort of fucky. Something to do with vitamin D seems to be the prevailing theory.

It definitely gets bad in the later years, but with all he advances that's gonna be come less and less the case

That is pretty shitty. It's a rough disease, and the symptoms can be just about anything, but it's not the symptoms that usually mess you up the worst, it's the accidents. My neuro would say 'you don't die from MS, you die with it.'

I don't think they cured it. They just managed to heal the specific lesions

It's an increased risk but not that much. MS isn't hereditary.

its sort of misleading. geographic location plays a much larger role, and naturally a lot of people have kids in the same place where they were born themselves.
