The California shooter's rage at not having sex isn't uncommon among awkward young men who were raised on the internet.

Thinking of yourself as a lesser person because you havent put your penis inside a vagina isnt a rare pathology; its the default state of being for many young men. A lot of that confusion and LiveJournal-esque angst is perfectly natural, but that frustration can mature and curdle to the point where the state of not having had sex becomes a self-imposed identity. The endpoint of this way of thinking can be found on the forums where Rodger discovered some slightly sympathetic posters who refer to themselves as incelsmen who are involuntarily celibate. These are people who have given themselves a name and banded together over something they havent done. Its like forming a group where you and I complain about never having been to Europe, or eaten a steak, or gone white-water rafting.

Because it seems to me that these groups get together to complain about this, but would be vindictive toward a member that solved the "problem.

some young guys are just too socially awkward on their own and need help to pull through some issues
they need someone to point out that hey getting laid should not be treated as life or death
society has a habit of just telling them to man up and get over their social problems, which isn't a solid solution
and it's a response that isn't told to young women even half as much....

because of damaging gender norms, a lot of awkward shy guys need more support then they're getting
without help, they can devolve into extreme problem cases that are reclusive, troubled, and violent
problems that could have been avoided if family and peers were a bit more sympathetic to young guys who are struggling

"Incel" doesn't mean virgin. If you had sex a long time ago, you are still accepted in their culture, as long as you think it was unfair that you got it then.

Yeah, it's a pretty stupid thing to shame guys for too, since it can push some guys into risky sex situations where they can contract STD's.

Interesting that 'incel' can also apply to guys who just haven't had sex in a long time...that might be true but I've gone thru very long periods of celibacy (year+) and didn't care, I just wasn't looking to get laid for a while.

I still think there's actually a lot more pressure on women in society to get laid, but it's all very subtle yet even more reinforced. Look at the birth control pill for example - that wouldn't be seen as a necessity unless a woman really was getting laid by random dudes throughout the year. And all women hear about is how their biological clock is ticking - after 35 getting pregnant becomes a hassle.

I know the red pill subreddit hate this term, but that is part of the toxic masculinity. You're not allowed to share your feelings, you're suppose to suck it up and get over it. You're not allowed to do wimpy things, you have to show that you're a man by "taking charge". Hell, being a stay at home dad is frowned upon in society.
