https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2017/10/13/trump-violates-core-conservative-values- yet-most-conservatives-still-refuse-to-condemn-him/

(remove space from URL, sorry, GameFAQs rules)

good write up. and before you Conservative lot scream "WASHINGTON POST FAKE NEWS RAWR", kindly note that this is written by a lifelong Conservative.

Notable points of interest:

- Trumps recent call to silence the press that paints him in a negative light is a direct violation of the Constitution. For a political group who claims to value this document over all else, I don't understand how you can legitimately defend this, outside of rationalizing your defense for "your guy".

- Conservatives claim to value life, yet Trump basically brushed aside Puerto Rico and the US Citizens living there. Instead, Trump focuses on his narcissistic obsession with NFL players not bowing to his wishes.

- He claims to be pro-Military but he dodged the draft. He literally mocked John McCain, a fellow "Conservative", mind you, for being a POW simply because McCain disagreed with him over a few issues.

Because for millions of Americans, conservatism has denigrated from being about issues to being about pissing off the other side. So long as the Trump base thinks he's making liberals sad or upset, they'll let him get away with anything even if they get completely fucked in the process as well.

they can call him out for being anti-Conservative. he is supposed to represent their party but he's making a mockery of their core values and most of the big players in the party remain silent, or worse, continue to praise and support him in spite of this.

a few Republicans have grown a spine and called him out, but not many.

It's amazing how you don't get it, yet.
Romney couldn't win PA. Hell, Bush never did. McCain didn't.

Trump has created a hybrid of supporters outside of the norm of Democrat and Republican. The fact that you're clumping in every conservative as a Trump supporter is startling. They may, in fact, be two different things.

Actually, it speaks volumes about the status of our current politics. The GOP might as well be two separate parties at this stage - one side being the classics, and the others who actually support Trump's agenda.

And the Democrats are just as separated on the issues. They also are full of corruption.

i just find it .... strange, that core members of the Republican party who claim to represent core Republican values don't say shit when the leader of their party so blatantly violates things they supposedly stand for.

I think the party itself is a problem. IMO: They need to get in line.

That said, I don't agree with what Trump said about the NFL or about the news lately. The government doesn't get to interfere with private businesses.

But...I think there's two different Trumps. There's the President Trump, and then there's shitposting Trump. Shitposting Trump won't actually try to take away the rights of private companies, but is just what a normal person would say after a beer or two. It's just talk. He's not a fascist. His right to free speech grants him to say these outlandish remarks. Just don't take it seriously...it's not good for your health.

The president doesn't control the party. The party does not answer to the President.

A lot of moderate Republicans don't support Trump simply because they themselves and their constituents who elected them in the first place do not support Trump.

Easy as that. As opposed to lazily saying the party itself should get in line, maybe the man himself should take a more active role in trying to compromise and broker consensus.

I'm being honest, dude. I've said what I disagreed with. When he shitposts, he carries his emotions on his sleeve. I'm telling you to not overreact to it. Nothing will come of his fascist like remarks. It's just talk.

Think of him as a regular person once in a while. I'm not saying you have to like him or agree with him about anything. Just try not to get so upset. I'm just saying you don't need to over-react to every little thing. He's trolling you guys and you don't even realize it.

It's shitposting Trump. The government cannot interfere with private companies. Just relax.

Just because he carries his emotions on his sleeve doesn't make him a bad person. He loves this country, and has a different philosophy of how to protect it going forward. That's it. He's a normal person. That was the allure of Trump. He responds like a normal person (who is passionate about the love of the country).

If he wasn't well grounded as "President Trump" we would've already launched missiles at NK.

He may not fit into your "presidential mold" but suck it up and deal with it. You're entitled to be vocal about your hatred. Just know he isn't a demon.

Anyway, I just want to say a few more things.

- Trumps recent call to silence the press that paints him in a negative light is a direct violation of the Constitution. For a political group who claims to value this document over all else, I don't understand how you can legitimately defend this, outside of rationalizing your defense for "your guy".

His supporters value silencing so long as the people being silenced are minorities or women, even if that includes themselves (See: Ann Coulter lamenting that women are allowed to vote)

- Conservatives claim to value life, yet Trump basically brushed aside Puerto Rico and the US Citizens living there. Instead, Trump focuses on his narcissistic obsession with NFL players not bowing to his wishes.

His supporters value birth, not life.

- He claims to be pro-Military but he dodged the draft. He literally mocked John McCain, a fellow "Conservative", mind you, for being a POW simply because McCain disagreed with him over a few issues.

Doesn't matter, as long as he's willing to cut the military an extra check, say feelgood virtue signal soundbytes about vets, and protect guns, his supporters will overlook his draft dodging.

But most importantly, all his supporters care about is undoing what Obama did. It literally doesn't matter what it is.

"Obama cured all cancer!" "What? Oh no that's not good, Cancer should be cured by private institutions, so we're going to roll that back." "Obama ended all hunger in America!" "Oh no gotta roll that back because people who don't lift themselves up by their bootstraps should starve."

You continue to prove my point by demonstrating why you do not get it. People were tired of the same politicians. They wanted a person who was emotional and normal. That's what people voted for. Until you accept this fact, your party will continue to lose the presidency.

It doesn't make him right with his shitposts. I totally agree. It's out of line. Trust me when I say he means no harm.

All I'm saying is that, ultimately, his shitposts are harmless. Also, he is protected under the first amendment to make them.

He doesn't fit the stereotype of a typical President because he isn't a typical president. This is what people wanted. You need to accept it. You don't have to like it. You have to accept it.

I read a book a while back that makes the case (though it was written before Trump's rise) that this sort of petulant opposition to what's perceived as the left is conservative values, more than any stated belief in the free market, or small government.

https://www.amazon.com/Reactionary-Mind-Conservatism-Edmund-Donald/dp/0190692006/

In The Reactionary Mind, Robin traces conservatism back to its roots in the reaction against the French Revolution. He argues that the right was inspired, and is still united, by its hostility to emancipating the lower orders. Some conservatives endorse the free market; others oppose it. Some criticize the state; others celebrate it. Underlying these differences is the impulse to defend power and privilege against movements demanding freedom and equality -- while simultaneously making populist appeals to the masses. Despite their opposition to these movements, conservatives favor a dynamic conception of politics and society -- one that involves self-transformation, violence, and war. They are also highly adaptive to new challenges and circumstances. This partiality to violence and capacity for reinvention have been critical to their success.

in short, "conservatives" have always gone right along with these sorts of things that "violate core conservative values" because their core values aren't actually what's stated. Before Trump, Bush jacked up the military budget. Before Bush, Reagan attached himself to a religious right that would increase government's control over what women and gay people can do. These aren't aberrations; they are conservatives.

When you keep biting on them, it starts to become funny after a while. Ultimately, your outrage starts with YOU.

He's not the boogeyman. He genuinely loves the country - and perhaps, his methods aren't for the best or clash with what you believe is best. You need to chill with calling him Hitler.
