I haven't watched a slasher movie in forever (discounting Alien and Predator), but I know that all of the attempted reboots of Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and all of the similar things failed utterly. Has there been a successful slasher movie since like the 90s? I'm not sure if I'd count Saw.

Alien and Predator aren't slasher movies, for one.

Saw doesn't count. I guess people liked the Texas Chainsaw remake but I hated it.

I'd say Nightmare reboot failed because it didn't have Englund or the classic Freddy style/humor. The Halloween reboot was weird and Friday the 13th's reboot just sorta sucked. It could be because they've been played out a billion times and people are tired of them, but then again people are still seeing other movies that have been taking over the market like all the superhero movies.

Basically, too many sequels and not enough success. Rushed productions and an insistence on continuing franchises broke audience's good will towards the franchises. In addition to this, the rise of home video made that format more suitable towards the genre, as it became relegated to direct-to-video stinkers, further hurting the slasher genre.

There's been a few successes since the '90s. The Hatchet series is a cult hit, and Norway's Cold Prey series is an international success story. The revival film Curse of Chucky was also very well done. The slasher films that have been the most successful are ones that turn the genre on its head: films like You're Next, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, American Psycho place a spotlight on the tropes to create something that's more fresh.

I think films like Saw evolved out of the slasher genre, and while elements are definitely shared, I wouldn't call them slashers per se.

studios making increasingly shitty sequels, the market became over saturated and fatigued are probably the biggest reasons if I had to guess.
