You've GOT to network nowadays to get a foot in the door. Its not "advantageous" or "beneficial", it's ESSENTIAL.

Do internships, volunteer in your field. Other people are so if you don't how do you expect to compete?

Yeah programming jobs have pretty absurd requirements given how brain dead most CRUD jobs are in reality. Plus you have to spend months grinding leetcode and etc for the algorithms test during the interview lol. It's okay I suppose just to weed out people who are too incompetent to even be trusted to develop CRUD.

A lot of those job 'requirements' are not requirements. They are put in place to prevent just anyone from applying. Higher standards keep applications down; making it easier to make a selection.

Lets not forget that most jobs are NOT advertised publicly. You are better off looking into companies you want to work for; and applying.

I tend to agree with this thread, however, in my experience, applying to jobs that require a minimum of 3-5 years of experience is possible. I just graduated college and applied to a lot of jobs requiring 3-5 years and got calls back.

Pair it with CS and you'll be fine. NLP is a hot field but you need to know programming, algorithms and ML for it. Linguistics is a cool field, lots of overlap with CS interestingly enough.

Thanks for the advice, and I'm finishing up my first programming class this week. And I didn't even know about NLP, I read a bit up on it and it seems really interesting.

I don't even think anyone seriously reads most job applications these days. From what I can tell, everyone I've asked just complains about how many applications they get, let the application tracking system filter most them out, re-post the job for months on end, then eventually hire someone's friend/relative. The modern job market is basically a compilation of incompetence, broken logic, & nepotism.
