As in, cigarettes used to be socially accepted. They were 'normal'. Most people smoked and if you didn't, people wondered why. But now, thanks to science, we realize that smoking/tobacco use is woefully unhealthy and it has turned into something that is stigmatized by society, for the most part.

Do you think that we'll eventually have the same turnaround on our views of soda? It already seems like it's becoming more and more socially unacceptable to treat sugary soda as a 'casual' beverage you consume with meals, for example. Will society eventually snub our collective noses at soda, similar to how we view cigarettes now?

I don't think we'll view it as bad as cigarettes, but I wouldn't be surprised if they become treated more like how we view dessert

in terms of direct effects on health, sure. but rising health care costs and insurance premiums affect a lot of people

that is a good point, though, and a very important distinction.

just like cigarettes, people are allowed to make unhealthy life choices. im just curious if the public perception will ever shift.

The US also has higher portions with food generally being loaded with sugar over fat. Not that soda is good for you, but soda isn't really the main reason we're fat.

I haven't Googled it, but isn't fast food overall more harmful to the country than soda is? In terms of our obesity problem, I mean. It seems we really shifted away from the 'home cooked family meals' image.

idk dude, some of the fat people i work with drink soda like most people drink water. there's a reason there is an entire aisle dedicated to soda in the food store

i think America's obesity epidemic is a multi-faceted problem.

but yeah, i suspect fast food and sugary sodas are the two biggest contributors. note that i have done absolutely zero research to back this claim.
