It makes me feel better that the real Best Fighting Game Character (THE GREATEST NIGHTMARE) lost to he that would eventually go on to take this competition.
And Terry's pretty cool I guess.

His design is snazzy, his play style is satisfying and easy to pick up without being cheap or especially spammy, his personality's cool, he's featured in a lot of different games, his theme songs are generally awesome too, and his engrish is amazing.
Dude's even man enough to take on a guy like Geese, kick his ass twice, still try to save his life, and then raise Geese's son as his own to be another badass fighter.
Who would you think is better anyway?

I personally like a bunch of more FG characters than Terry because of some subjective issues like "I like their style better."
And it's not like I disliked Terry or anything. Just that I was completely indifferent to him and was actually surprised to find out he was so popular i.e. I didn't 'get it' and was wondering what I was missing.
Well he's way more well known than a ton of other fighting game characters. Only other ones really close to his mascot levels are Ryu, Scorpion, and Sub Zero.
Ryu's just way more boring in every area. Sub Zero and Scorpion are kinda identical design-wise, have no cool theme songs (at least in games), their only good game is basically MK9, nothing as catchy as Terry's toooons of engrish (closest is GET OVER HERE), more boring fighting style (Terry punches way more and his punches explode and stuff, rad stuff), and they aren't as laidback and cool as Terry acts.

I just don't really see a reason to hate on Dan. Like even if you find him unfunny I wouldn't say he gets in your face to the point where you want him off your screen-- just not enough screentime or relevance and very weak in plot. He's mostly ignorable, and I'd imagine all the ass kickings he gets would make up for it at least if you don't find him funny.

I don't really hate him, but I find him more obnoxious than funny and I acknowledge that Terry was just an all-around better choice for a winner. Don't think he should've went out in Round 1 like Suor, but him getting past not one, but two of the most iconic MK ninjas is, well... a joke!

I feel like Terry must've been the perfect combination of "I played that game" and "funny." The SF characters and the bigger MKers slaughtered this contest because of the former, and Dan made the finals because of both.

If this contest is repeated, I'd suggest a little more info on the characters than just images. Ideally movesets or videos, but just a descriptive paragraph would be nice.

Just to be clear, I don't exactly hate Dan either, but I would've picked every single character he has faced over him and I think he's way too overrated for what he has to offer.
You can make a case for franchise popularity for GG, KoF and even MK characters, but beating Ken? No, and I'm not a big Ken fan, he just feels much better to play (well duh) and is definitely the more likeable character.
Maybe I just don't get Dan.

Dude, Ken is lame. He's practically the same as Ryu without any of the plot relevance and he just became so typical to see used because he was incredibly easy to use! A boring second banana does not benefit from overexposure by bad players.
Dan's way more interesting and enjoyable. He's ballsy enough to be focused entirely on pointless taunting, he's almost always low tier so that choosing him and winning's generally bragging rights, he acts goofy, wears a bright pink gi... all around way more entertaining.
Even how he was made was great! SNK copied concepts of SF in their Art of Fighting series, so in concept art for SF, they made a random new character shown by Sagat beating the crap out of them. Said character's got the head of one protagonist of AoF and the body of the other one, and somehow from this art he becomes a full fledged character. And then he even steals the moves from the AoF guys.
