This guy went way too hard on it, and some of the points the brought up was that the camera "implied", not "guaranteed", which isn't a completely fair critique

Uh, the entire point of it was to look at the scene from an editing and directing standpoint.

Nolan's sense of action is terrible, agreed. He's good at plotplotplot, even when they go against the character(sup Two-Face), but his action scenes are never anything to write home about.

Then he did a bad job of it.

The point of the video was "even if you don't view these scenes in slow-motion while analyzing them, your brain still registers them as incoherent and/or nonsensical." Which is fair - while I enjoyed the fireworks when I first saw the film, the action scenes definitely had a bunch of "WTF is going on" moments for me.

Dude raises a ton of points that aren't exactly relevant to the chase scene, or that I feel were intentionally used for good effect. For example the orientation of Dent in the back of the truck is not actually important information because the only thing his presence there is meant to convey is "he's in the truck" and "he's getting rattled as the truck gets hit." Knowing where the truck got hit by the orientation of how Dent is shaking around is pretty "who cares." Hell if you want me to get all film critiquey it's likely that they were intentionally showing Dent at an angle that doesn't capture the whole sweep of the back of the truck to help induce a sense of panic and confusion-- if you can see the whole terrain back there the scene feels more controlled. It's also possible they made the shots zoomed in on just one to make it feel more claustrophobic back there.

Basically what I'm saying is "being hard to follow" can be a tool to make the scene more effective. And it's clearly something the Dark Knight does intentionally at times to create a feeling of panic.

I couldn't get more than halfway through it. I think the only good point he brought up was the random third cop car showing up.

He also does an analysis of an action sequence for Salt, if you want to see him talking about what he considers a good action sequence.

I enjoyed it, it was interesting to look at it from an editing perspective.

I've never seen The Dark Knight though, and I have no real reaction to someone saying something negative about it.

Now that I think about it, I think I was pretty confused with the action scene the first time I saw it as well. But mostly the part after they get out of the tunnel.

This is going to sound horrible, but she reminds me of a monkey because that cleft thing everyone has under their noses is extra long on her.

30 seconds in, I realized I really don't want to hear why a scene I enjoyed sucked from some guy who probably spent his entire weekend picking apart that scene just so he can prove to people it sucks.

You can't stand to hear criticism for something you enjoyed? I mean... you can still enjoy it and understand the criticism.

This is why I pointed on the Salt one where he likes the scene he's talking about. Because I have a feeling a lot of people are taking this personally for some strange reason.

I see that now.

Anyway, in the second half he points out some things like... the van not moving into an open lane to get away from the gun fire, and the van suddenly being way farther ahead of where it was a split second before in relation to the other vehicles after Batman blocks the RPG. It has some good points I think.

Not really. I just don't want to have to see the flaws everytime I watch the scene because someone pointed them out in great detail.

Things like this ruin movies for me. Which is why I can't even stand watching the new star wars after watching all the Pinkett reviews.

Decided to watch the rest. Open lane thing is pretty irrelevant-- it actually makes no difference because they're pretty close either way and swapping lanes might do more harm than good as it's easier to lose control of the vehicle if doing a lane swap. Joker shooting the police car randomly, is yes, because he's the joker I thought that much was obvious.

The truck moving ahead when batman intercepts the RPG is kinda weird I'll give it but the inconsistency was actually in the one scene where the car jumps in front of the RPG-- the van was slightly ahead in all the other shots even the ones before it. It's likely they included the van in the shot where Joker shot at the van to make it clear that's what he was shooting at. Not really a reason to forgive it or anything but yeah just sayin as a point of interest there.

So yeah that makes two good points total in a sea of bad or irrelevant ones. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The "where's Dent in the van" point was bad. It was relevant that he was in the van - didn't matter where exactly in the van he was. I don't think his points about a lot of the editing making things more confusing were bad, though. I get that Nolan did it just to make the panic come across, but that doesn't mean the guy can't dislike it or prefer a scene where it's more clear what exactly is happening. Just a matter of taste.

True that some people might prefer something that's easier to follow, but if you're doing an objective critique you probably shouldn't be blasting the editing for intended effects.

At least I was under the impression he was attempting to be objective.

I title the video "How to be Overly Nitpicky". There are a few good points in the half of the video I watched, but it seems that some of the stuff is just filler. I think I would take it more seriously if they didn't use "the audience" (or "the viewer" or whatever was said, I forgot) and instead used "I", such that they didn't imply that everyone watching the scene gets disoriented. I personally don't feel disoriented by the scene.
