I think I may go with an Essentio Desktop. I have two different ones I'm looking at now. Literally the only differences are the graphics card. It's an ATI Radeon 3000 vs ATI 6450.

I'm thinking about getting one of these or an HP Pavilion. It'll be an Intel Core i5 vs Intel Core i7 processor.

I dunno about PCs in particular, but I can't imagine them not being good. I have an ASUS Laptop and it has performed very well. My only issue with it is the plastic it's made of isn't quite heavy duty enough to deal with the heat output-- the case is kinda warped near the vents. I'd imagine their PCs have better onboard cooling/composition though due to more space.

I have an HP pavillon

only problem with it is my model has these annoying as hell touch buttons that I can't turn off and don't work right, so occasionally my computer'll have a seizure where the volume is continually turning itself up and down and it freezes up my computer because it's stupid.

however this might be because I've dropped it a couple times!

other then that, great computer. I should take better care of it.

It's the same thing except for the type of graphics card I want.

$619.99 for an ATI 6450 (which I was told is superior) - They will need to ship it in.

vs

$559.99 for an ATI Radeon 3000 - I can just get at the store.

If you are planning to play a bunch of games on the computer, then both of those graphics cards are terrible. If you aren't planning to game then it doesn't really matter.

You'd probably get more help on the PC board.

The 6450 is very low end and is weaker than the integrated graphics on the processors which came out this year. It isn't really meant for gaming. And since your other option is cheaper, I'm guessing that its worse.

From what I've experienced, you basically are going to have to drop a bit of cash on a graphics card if you want your games to look good. $100-$150 range will get the job done, but $200+ for the really nice ones. You can spend some serious cash on graphics cards and not see much improvement (imo) over the middle-end cards, so generally stay away from the ones over $300.

About 2 years ago I bought a PNY nVidia Geforce 8800 GT with.. 512mb? dedicated memory and paid $120 for it and I have been able to play every single game I've thrown at it with very high settings and it doesn't care at all. This includes, but is not limited to

ME2 (oh man, on HD monitor it was beautiful)
Assassin's Creed
TF2
Dragon Age
Portal
Amnesia
...etc

and that's on a two year old card that was barely over $100. I bet you could find one for very similar price that's actually better than mine because it'll be a newer model.

tl;dr: buy a computer that has an intrgrated GPU and spend the extra money on the dedicated card

the graphics cards around 100% are what you should be looking at. I got an Nvidia GTX 460 for about 130 bucks a few months ago.

I think I'm going to go with the ATI Radeon 3000 for now, and then I'll see how that runs my stuff. If I need to, I'll upgrade. If they're not even $150, then I think I'll be alright when I need one later. But for now I think I can survive.

I have people who don't know computers telling me that these computers have to be lesser than HP and Dell because they cost less. Is there any particular reason an Asus is less money than an HP or Dell?

No, do not get a Radeon 3000. Get a 6670 at least.

because HP and Dell don't work with or create their own parts really. you'll never hear about a dell motherboard but that's probably the BEST thing Asus is good at. which as a result leads to a good computer since that's 1 of the 2 main parts that determines your computer's livelihood.

if you're getting a desktop then you've 2 options with the vid card. 1) get a good one already, 2) don't care about it and upgrade it after it comes in.

if you're doing the 2nd then it doesn't matter. and frankly both those cards you mentioned blow ass.
*checks*

'k, so it's a 100% AMD based system. hexacore you don't really need but hey, it's nice enough and i heard you can double on some the cores. haven't tried yet. first thing to say here then: any mentions to NVIDIA throw out.

if you want a good vidcard standalone it'll ring you some $80 min, including any rebates into that price (so more like $100 and in 6 weeks you get a check). you can go for a bit less if you want something that's just functional, but yeah. either way the difference between the 3000 and 6450 aren't gonna matter if you're trying to play modern games in medium or better. for the easiest standard of all to use, go with this:

if you see DDR5 in the vid card, you've got something relatively modern and should work well.
if you see DDR3, you're looking at tech that's really more like 4 years ago.

might be an exception or two out there, but it's an easy standard to work with.

Okay looking at graphics cards right now. See if I can get any quick answers.

$180 - Radeon HD 6770
$160 - Radeon HD 6750
$90 - ... 4670
$80 - 4550
$65 - 4350

Are any of these a better value than the other?

you missed the 5xxx line entirely there, which is much closer to the 100 mark than the others (and a rebate to bring it down more). or should be. the more expensive ones are better yeah, but everything there's been jacked up a good third of what it ought to be.

depends on the specifics to the 5770 more than anything else. who makes it, is it 512MB or 1GB, etc. but 5770's a fantastic card and extremely competitive with the 6770 since really they're the same line. for these cards you need to look at the 2nd number to understand it, not the 1st. both ways, that card should almost always come with DDR5 so it's a good start to work with.

5770 for 95 is good, but there is also the issue of whether or not the power supply will be able to handle it.

then yes, that price is fine. 1GB's the main thing to be in there, and XFX is a well known company that makes 'em. for a reference point, the card came out last year so it's pretty new. of everything listed it's easily the best bang for buck and a damn fine card as well.

one thing though that's being sorely overlooked - your power supply. that thing should not be 400 watts if you're gonna run a hexacore and a good vid card.

I've got a GeForce 9500, a card not good enough to appear on that Tom's Hardware list, and it runs everything I've tried to play well enough. Wait on a video card until you actually know that you need something better. Chances are you'll be able to run just about everything you want with the card they give you, and if you can't you can always pick up a new one later when, in all likelihood, they will be cheaper.
