For proof, take that other blue mascot. Many have complained that Sonic the Hedgehog games keep getting made while Mega Man games keep getting cancelled, but look at how Sonic exists today – considered a joke by most, with three games released per year that invariably disappoint his increasingly bitter fans. Would you rather have your hero die with dignity now, or live in a state of permanent undeath, trotted out like a whore in embarrassing spin-offs by a studio that's thoroughly burned out? That's Sonic’s fate, and I find it laughable that some wish the same for Mega Man.

Please, Sonic's gotten a hell of a lot better lately.

Of course, there's one big difference between Mega Man and Sonic – Sonic is actually popular, a mainstream icon as opposed to a cult figure. Mega Man's fans need to realize and acknowledge that this "flagship" series has never been a flagship series. The character’s starred in a few gems, of course, but he hasn’t had a consistently brilliant run. Nowadays, the games are most successful when tugging at retro heartstrings, but although Mega Man 9 was a hit, Mega Man 10 already saw sales drop significantly enough for the publisher to worry. So when fans say Capcom made a terrible business decision to cancel Mega Man's last two games, I say they're full of s***.

Did MM10 actually lose that much in sales? I never heard this but I didn't pay much attention.

While I'm not happy that Mega Man is dead (if he is), I don't think anyone can think that milking a franchise as much as Capcom has done with Mega Man is a good thing. Give the franchise a break, at least for the time being

Its an assumption, but it is one that may have some basis. Ever since Mega Man 10, the series has pretty much died.. so it would make sense that Mega Man 10 was a total flop sales wise

Except that the only piece of info that can even be found at all regarding sales/etc., of it contradicts that, with MM10 debuting in the top 5 on XBLA. Hard to imagine it sold so bad that it somehow killed the series, especially since they sold DLC with it.

This article doesn't even address the main problem: that even if this was the appropriate time to put Mega Man on hiatus, the way to go about doing it is not to make promises about future games, create a prototype for a game with a loyal fanbase, pull the plug on the project, and then blame the fans.

Megaman ISN'T dying with dignity now. He hasn't even been given a chance. How is it that the same company that made Onimusha 3, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil 4 couldn't make even one good 3d Megaman last gen? Because they don't care. The only people keeping Megaman alive had been Inti Creates, who made the Megaman Zero games as well as Megaman 9 and 10. The Battle Network games weren't bad, but it was too obvious they were just a cash cow drawing on the Megaman name. Now that Capcom was finally giving Megaman a chance with actually new games, rather than the same thing, what do they do? Cancel them. He's not "dying with dignity," Megaman is just being plain cut-off entirely.

Nor was there any hint that MML3 would be a "bad game" as you so fear. Seriously, there were all of TWO Megaman games coming out this year, both of them new concepts. It is CAPCOM'S job to make games, not the fans. The fans can try to contribute, but when Capcom refused to release even the prototype, fans really had nothing to go on. I don't see how they can contribute from there, and Capcom is making it sound like the project was entirely on them, the people with no access to any actual assets.

Why should anyone trust what Capcom says? These (and Inafune, but he's not there now) are the people who dissolved one of the best, most consistent development teams (Clover), driving out two of their best directors (Mikami and Kamiya), and aside from fighting games, has done practically NOTHING right this generation. Even that is slipping, announcing a new version of MvC3 FIVE MONTHS after the original came out. If they make up some flimsy excuse about how "not enough people were interested," I don't see any compelling reason I should believe any of it.

This person from the comments pretty much sums up why this article is stupid.

Do you live in a world where games stop selling a week after they are released or something.

Stopped reading at the Sonic comparison.

Sonic's been on a massive upswing as of late and Generations hype is extremely positive. MML3 probably wouldn't have been a second wind for the franchise, but this isn't like putting an animal out of its misery. It IS possible to get your act together and make, you know, better and more profitable games.

It's just why bother with an expensive original venture when you can port RE4's minigame for $40?

Just FYI, GamesRadar gave Sonic Colors a 7/10. I'm not sure if something on MOM's level of critical acclaim is supposed to signify "this franchise is making a comeback!", although then again this is the franchise that went from "SEGA's shining mascot" to "worst game of the decade" in 15 years so whatever.

Fan reception of Colors was far stronger than a Sonic game had gotten in a long time, which means more to me in the context of the discussion than what GR thought of the game.

Pulling the plug on MML3 because MM10 possibly sold bad makes as much sense to me as pulling the plug on a new Paper Mario game because Mario Kart didn't sell as well as you thought it would.

The article does specifically state that fan interest in MML3 wasn't enough to justify the game's production continuing on, plus generally the loudest fans are rather small in number...

And honestly, I don't think it's entirely out of the question for Nintendo to pull the plug on a new Mario RPG if a Mario Kart fails to meet commercial expectations. That being said, your hypothetical example is far more "out there" than the actual Mega Man one - both MM10 and MML3 are platformers, after all.

I suppose Japanese companies are kinda idiotic when it comes to business decisions and whatnot. It's a wonder that Nintendo released its best game since 1994 last year.

I stopped giving one f*** about the franchise for a long, long time, my only exposure to Sonic's horrendous outings being through five-minute stares of disbelief at my friend's siblings' televisions. When I watched the previews for Sonic Colors and when I actually played the game, I was immediately brought back to the franchise, if only temporarily. Then I played the Sonic Generations demo and I continue to be impressed.

I don't get clingy with franchises that go that stale and you should consider playing these recent games yourself!

there's platforming in it but that's not really the focus at all, most areas are flat, compared to a sidescrolling Mega Man where you're near-constantly jumping around.

Perhaps you should you know, play a game before you try to talk about what it is or isn't like or what a company should do with its franchise

I thought what might be the biggest problem is putting it on 3ds. Not enough people have a 3ds yet to make it really viable in terms of fan interest, since they were basing it all around getting the fans involved in making the game. PSP is the 2nd best selling system in Japan this gen at 17 million (first if you count DS dead), which is Mega Mans main market. And as far as I know, there is no Japanese numbers out for the Mega Man PSP games in Japan, only American numbers. It would be a lot better than a system I don't think has even passed 1 million yet there (though I can't find any legit Japanese sales for 3ds).

Besides, since the DS ones sold better, why wouldn't they think putting it on the 3DS is a better idea than putting it on a dying handheld that never made them money in the first place?
