The gameplay of Planescape was not awful. I'd describe it more as mediocre

There was some discussion about this on the Top 10 board a bit back.

"Awful" is pretty hard to come by for me regarding gameplay. So I can't list Xenogears which I find has average gameplay in a lot of ways and decently strong gameplay in others -- but never great.

Dude, it was awful. Everything about it ranged from terrible to okay. The story and dialogue are amazing, but the actual gameplay is awful.

Dead Rising seems to kind of fit this. I'd call the gameplay "subpar" though, not mediocre.

Silent Hill 2 has a decent (but vague) story but awful gameplay. 70% checking door locks.

Yeah I think I had trouble playing through Silent Hill 2 because the gameplay is terrible. I don't mind locked doors, but the controls are combat are just bad.

The real answer is Siren. Gameplay was clunky survival horror, you needed a walkthrough to progress through the timeline, it was insanely hard, mainly due to the cheating sniper zombies being able to shoot you through the fog while you couldn't see them. But I loved the story and those crazy Japanese characters with their British accents

Vague question, guess you're a fan of the game? But yeah you can look at a bunch of posts from folks on The Longest Journey board to explain. It's a bore to drudge through, the puzzles are terrible, etc, but the story seems pretty good.

Only thing at all wonky about Longest Journey's gameplay was how bloody long April took to run around the screens. But I'm pretty sure that could be changed in the options

I thought the puzzles were good. Certainly not awful. I've played awful adventure games. Dreamfall might qualify.

While we're talking adventure games, are you a fan of Space Quest or Quest for Glory? Those are my favs, nobody else on B8 seems to be when I give 'em a shoutout.

Haven't played them. I tend to like the linear type where you can't hit dead ends That might explain our difference in tastes.

I've played some Quest for Glory games. Never did get around to finishing the series, but I loved 4. I was waiting forever for the 2 remake to come out, and by the time it finally did I kinda lost interest.

Hotel Dusk definitely fits the bill.
