If it's funny it's funny, no matter the target. If it's just mean spirited it's not a joke. Up and down can be so grey anyways. Can gay people joke about black people? Can muslims joke about disabled people? Who draws the line?

It really depends on the intent behind it. I'm gonna have a very different view of such a joke when it's made by a notorious bigot than when it's made by a member of the group it mocks or even just by someone who isn't a bigot.
That applies to "punching up" jokes too, for that matter. --- Hello there! I am a signature. I'm kinda surprised you're even reading me, to be honest. Most people wouldn't bother. You're better than that though. Thank you. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Depends on how the joke is made. There are funny ways to joke about any person or group, but being flat out mean isnt the way to do it.

Eh
Nobody should be punching at all tbh. But I can at least acknowledge that other people don't see it the same way and just let these things go. --- There's a difference between canon and not-stupid. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Punching up and punching down rely on exactly the same mechanism to cause amusement: they make those who are in on the joke feel superior.
Neither make a joke good though. That comes down to things like delivery, tone, word play, absurdity, etc. --- 'Vinyl is the poor man's art collection'. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I think I would need an example of what a joke is that would be considered "punching up"

Much of humor depends on an unexpected or reversed outcome. Punching up is a reversal of the usual power structure so it enables humor. Punching down aligns with existing structures so its humor must depend on reversals like being surprised that somebody would dare say something so callous or tension regarding whether an opinion is honestly held or a character. It's weaker and riskier (and not in a good way). ... Copied to Clipboard!

Complaints about punching down just seem akin to me as being able to dish it out but not be able to take it.
Punching down can certainly be more crass, lazy, and sloppy, but I don't think anything or anyone is off-limits for a well-crafted joke. --- Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Not really. Either can be funny or not, depending on the joke and how its being told.
