Wanting the user generated content does not equate to wanting the site. Payouts could be to cover them for using the guides to train AI and future proof themselves against lawsuits, for example.

We already can't have nice things, since companies like Fandom and everyone much bigger than them have been deliberately ruining the Internet for years since they know they have the human race by the balls.

Everything will be ad-infested, sanitized, and user-unfriendly because they need to maximize profit and everyone is going to be forced to use the Internet anyway. Nothing about the Internet has gotten better in at least a decade.

Things will only get worse across the entirety of society because capitalism still hasn't squeezed every penny out of us poor saps. Our spirits aren't broken enough. There are still ways for human beings to feel something when they aren't at work, and that just simply won't do for corporations when there's still money to be made.

Google says it's worth around $60k. So it's more likely that they're simply not worth the effort to sell . People on CE are capable of buying it outright. Fandom most likely feels it's worth the gamble to try and do something with it since drawing up a contract to even sell it would make the sale a waste of time. $60k doesn't move their needle much in any direction and if that's the evaluation, it's probably only making like $10-15k a year and trending downwards.

Most likely the data from experiments they're doing are worth more to them than any reasonable price. We're essentially viewed as a cadaver

This is one of the reasons the web went to shit when sites went from being run by individuals who did it out of actual interest to companies. They added nothing but fancy graphucs and flash effects that served only to price the little guy out of the game.

Pretty much. The consolidation of the Internet has only benefitted the terminal cancer that is the advertisement industry.

Run up the costs for the little guys so hobby sites can't exist. If they do, bury them under 16 pages of awful search results and 1 page of half ass accurate ones, so people don't end up there, because that revenue increase is all that matters.

Gonna really miss message boards. This site was pretty much the last sorta bigger one besides rateyourmusic. Internet truly peaked in the late 00s and early 10s.

They cant be that cold as it was stated you needed to have logged into CE recently to have access after the board was made private.

I'll never understand why cjayc thought he couldn't run this site anymore just because he wasn't as into gaming as he used to be.

I generally call out people with nostalgia but they're pretty right in this case. Sometime in the late 2010s is when corporates really started going overdrive with the greed and it's also when internet restriction bills started passing with less opposition. More sites are gated behind log-ins, more sites are restricted, more sites are cutting features, more sites care more about ads than their userbase, decade old sites shut down with new sites being a lot less consumer-friendly/healthy.
It used to be that you could search anything you want and get it. Nowadays it's HARDER to find things you want with how many google results are stripped away by companies. No more caches either.

When a corporation is slowly destroying something and people are pissed, going "What should the corporation do? Not monetize everything for the benefit of their shareholders?" is kind of a stupid argument .

And maybe the person who is friends with a bunch of unhinged lunatics that think they are personally responsible for destroying the website should not be making it.

You need a better argument in support of the enshittification of the Internet than "Corporations have a responsibility to maximize profit"

And yet, prior to social media, doxxing, brigading, and online stalking were incredibly rare. Misinformation was not remotely as prevalent, and I cannot stress that enough. "Text/Desk Neck" was not remotely as common. Literal hoax news sites were few and far between (SEO abuse for monetization on social media didn't exist yet, obviously) and were mostly restricted to pranks like Bonsai Kitty.
Stupid "challenges" were few and far between (the choking game has had a pretty long shelf life, but "challenges" that involve committing actual crimes and other socially destructive behavior generally did not exist on a large scale)

Look at the shitstorm that happened during the Pandemic. For fuck's sake, in various parts of the world you had people suggest things like snorting coke, drinking industrial bleach, eating datura/angel's trumpet, or snorting (yes, SNORTING) lemonjuice.
