For the same reason why people on the east coast (including Ontario) and parts of the south pronounce Oregon as "Oreh-gone", while the rest of the country (including British Columbia) pronounce it correctly. ... If someone had explained that this was a French word, I might have been able to piece it together, but "sheek" sounds pretty much like a lot of English words (sheer, sheep, sheet) that definitely don't begin with "chi." --- There's a difference between canon and not-stupid. ...
