He's a worthless moron who fucks up everything he touches and also a complete psychopath motivated by power. He's willing to kill multiple friends and allies to get what he wants. But he also doesn't know what he wants or why. And also has no personality. Why was he supposed to be a protagonist? The cannibalistic murderous Ghoul had more redeeming qualities.

Fits in with what youd expect from someone in the Brotherhood tbh.

Also Im only in episode 6 but I would say it definitely comes across like we arent supposed to like him. Im still convinced he did put the blade in his friends boot.

A lot of the Brotherhood are ruthless but they're not as dense as this empty eyed goldfish.

I mean isn't it that he knew exactly what he wanted, which was to be in the BoS/wear the power armor but became disillusioned with the bullshit and the failing upwards and meeting Lucy that now he's not sure what he wants.

I do genuinely wonder if he's written to be autistic. I don't mean that in an insulting way, he's just socially stunted in a way that no one else in the Brotherhood is.

He was a far more interesting character before they sort of hero'd him up a little in the back half. I enjoyed him far more when he was an apparent sociopath who just happened to be on the right side of things.

No we are not. He's suppose to show us how bad the upbringing of the Brotherhood is. How at best you end up being a well intended moron while most of the time you end up being a self entitled jerk. He jumps between both on a dime.

Of the three characters the Ghoul is the most fleshed out, pun intended, because he's the one who understands the world of the wasteland the best. Lucy and Max were both sheltered and stunted in different ways.

Pretty sure they made him very unlikable on purpose so no.
Infact until the end the viewer believed that he put the knife in his friend's boot. Turns out his friend did it themself.

We're supposed to empathize with him. I don't like Maximus, but I understand why his character is the way he is and think the actor portraying him did a great job.

Same with The Ghoul.

You are not supposed to like anybody. It's Fallout, so the entire point is that everybody is terrible and everything sucks (tvtropes://CrapSackWorld). Even the idyllic past sucks. But that's why we like it.

Lol. Funny thing is, she's obviously supposed to be the stand-in for the wide-eyed Player Character experiencing the horrors and silliness of the Wasteland for the first time; but we all know that most players have already murdered at least one innocent NPC for their cool clothes within the first hour of gameplay. So no matter what moral pitfalls Lucy makes, she'll still have a substantial leg-up on most Fallout PC's karma-wise.

I'm only in episode 4 and Lucy is the only main character I like. Maximus is my least favorite. Ghoul guy just seems so mean spirited that I can't like him, but I'm sure he'll get a redemption by the end and make up for it. I don't get that feeling about Maximus.

Also, what up with him constantly being hit in the nose? Seems like every episode he's getting it busted at least once.

I think it's from being sheltered while in the BoS. The small part where he talks about how it gets hard and pops out white stuff like a pimple is a lack of education/miseducation, not someone having a disability. That's how I see it anyways.

That might be part of it, but like a previous poster pointed out, no other character in the Brotherhood is like that. You even see a quick shot of an aspirant masturbating in his bunk.

There's also the fact that so many of his problems are self-inflicted simply because he can't explain himself properly. Why couldn't he bring himself to simply explain that a Yao Guai killed Knight Titus? It could be a mix of guilt and 'idiot-driven plot' contrivance, but I think there's some credence to the notion that he might be deliberately written as neurodivergent. When the show started I would've more easily written it off as sloppy writing, but the show got considerably better as it went on and the writers proved their chops, so it's easier now to see Maximus' dialogue choices as deliberate.

I was hoping for some kind of body horror payoff to that line, where someone's junk actually does pop like a zit because they were so heavily mutated, like the melt scene in Planet Terror.

This, which I think the show did a good job at. These characters are human, they're not always going to be perfectly clean and do the right/logical things all the time. The most important part about writing characters is just having us empathize with the things they do and why they do them in context to the story.

no, i think he was meant to be the "evil choice" considering it's Fallout and they have a lot of good/bad options in their games. the reason he has the armor at all is because he's not a good guy. the final arc is supposed to be his growth and redemption though.

but bethesda has always been on the "when they gain more power they get more evil" mindset so i have a feeling the ending will lead to bad things instead of good.

This was how I saw it.

Dude was a kid brought into the brotherhood after his family was obliterated. All he knew was that life and he obviously never had much contact with others outside of it, similar to Lucy who'd only had interactions with other vault dwellers.

I think Maximus is complicated.

He wants to be a "hero" except the specific type of hero that he wants to be is a Brotherhood of Steel Knight which is...problematic for many reasons.

On top of that, he's not only socially stunted due to his upbringing, but he also doesn't get respect from his peers either (likely because he was adopted into the BoS, instead of being born into it). He basically has a massive chip on his shoulder which causes him to do some borderline sociopathic shit to earn the Brotherhood's favor.

But he does seem to be more disillusioned by the BoS by the end, so that should hopefully mellow him out. Also, something about the fact that he always manages to fail upwards is weirdly endearing. He clearly has no idea what he's doing, but bless his heart he's trying lol.

Tbf, Titus told Maximus that he'd be executed for letting his Knight die, so he probably figured he couldn't go back to the Brotherhood without Wilzig.
