Also is the Orville good? Kinda interested after watching this scene, didn't seem like a comedy at all it seemed more serious than subversive.

Orville is excellent, especially if you are a Star Trek TNG fan. It is the closest we get these days.

The first season is really good, but the show struggles a little to find the proper tone. Seasons 2-3 are GREAT and not to be missed.

The episode you cite, Majority Rule is probably my least favorite of the whole series.

It is. It basically tried to focus more on comedy in the first season because that was what Fox wanted, but when it veered further into serious moments, it got a lot better.

And why does that girl look familiar? She's not the cobra Kai girl, thought it was her but that's another actress. I know I've seen her in something else though

I really should finish watching this series. I started Season 3 but forgot about it a few episodes in. Maybe it's that the episodes are just too long now...

Oh, is it not a good episode? I thought "you're confusing opinion with knowledge" was a surprisingly self-aware line from what I initially thought was a parody show.

I really hate the streaming format stretching shows out to a half hour/full hour or longer. You can tell there's padding and it screws up the pacing.

The same thing happened with Disenchantment.

Orville shamelessly rips of multiple TV show plots and I am okay with that.

The Orville episode Majority Rule, was different enough from the Black Mirror episode Nosedive that I wouldn't call it a rip off. But I do wonder if the writers wanted to take a break for a week from homaging Star Trek TNG to homage a new sci-fi show for a week.

Seth MacFarlane should have a lot of sway with fox studio heads right, do the show the way he wants. That's probably how he could even launch another sci-fi show off the ground, knowing what Fox did to the other one *cough* firefly *cough*

I also liked that line (read my sig!), and that episode has its moments. Parts of it are really funny too. But the plot wasnt as good as other Orville episodes (some supposedly smart characters do some really dumb things to move the plot along), and the commentary about social media was pretty shallow and one note.

Interestingly, there are a couple of episodes later in the run of the show that touch on some of the same topics to much better effect, at least for me.

I was enjoying Orville, but there was one episode that was so cringe-inducingly stupid that I had to pause the episode a solid half dozen times at least and couldn't finish it. After that, I never got around to picking it back up again.

It was the episode where they visited a planet similar to earth except with live voting on if people should be punished or not, and the entire episode hinged on the crew being a) unusually stupid by even their standards and b) somehow shocked at the idea that an alien world had different cultural standards.

Edit: haha, it was literally the episode of the clip. My bad.

This episode was fairly popular I think. I always had issues with it because LaMarr was just too stupid in it. They needed a less idiotic way to get him in trouble. But it does have some good stuff in it.

S2 and S3 are, on the whole, better than S1 but even S1 is good.

I think the reason that he got arrested for humping a statue is because season one was still Seth MacFarlane writing it primarily as a comedy so he could trick FOX into letting him have the show to begin with. If this episode were in any other season I'm sure they would have picked a better "crime" to go with and everybody could have acted more in-character.

I agree with your analysis of that episode completely, but if you are interested please dont let it keep you from watching the rest of the show. Orville really is great, and as I posted before: I think this episode is their worst effort by a considerable margin.

He went to fox wanting to head a Star Trek show that eventually became discovery. They turned him down. He came back with a Star Trek-like show that had some humor to it and they agreed on the grounds he made it look like a parody. Plus with Discovery on the horizon they wanted to get ahead of it.

Another fun fact is that her dad is Shea Whigham who you'd probably recognize from very many projects.

Yeah, I hear it had gotten really good, but the problem is that my DVR/streaming backlog is already a few miles long. I honestly doubt that I'd get back into it even if I was really, really interested.

Heck, I still haven't watched any of the new season of Futurama, aka the show I was absolutely the most interested in.

They had my interest, lost it completely, and I doubt that it'll crack back into my sphere of interest as a result, even fully recognizing that it's my loss.
