The players and managers and fans are all very much aware that any Angel Hernandez umpired game has a risk to turn into a joke and they just accept it.

It's actually the union which keeps him around, or MLB would have fired him ages ago. He tried the race card and got shot down, it's not hard to prove he's bad at his job.

Angel is absolutely both the type to actually be this incompetent, and also the type to do this on purpose just because his over-inflated ego dictates that he has to dunk on the rookie to put him in his place.

Incompetent. Hes horrible. Fucks up a lot of calls for someone at the pro level.

Fun fact: In 2001, Steve McMichael (recent hall of fame inductee for the Chicago Bears) sang Take Me Out To The Ball Game during the 7th inning stretch at a Cubs game. Angel Hernandez had been making his usual bad calls (yes, 23 years ago) and McMichael called him out in front of the entire stadium, and booed him. Angel had him ejected for that.

He's incompetent for sure, but this is a pretty special kind of incompetent. None of those were even close. And as the tweet says, that last one was the largest miss on a called strikeout ever measured by Umpire Auditor.

He's 62 years old. That's retirement age. He should retire now and or be pushed by outside forces to retire soon. He's a black mark on baseball and the faster he's gone from the sport the better.

I'd also prefer not to replace these umps who are on their way out, so that someday MLB can roll out robots to fill the positions of calling balls and strikes.

The umps aren't going to be replaced though. They just won't be actually calling balls and strikes. You'd still need one behind home plate to actually relay that information.

And most umpires are pretty decent. They're just rarely perfect. I wouldn't want them to lose their jobs just because they're human and bound to make errors. Just take the human factor out as much as possible.

He's just complete filth and makes calls based on emotion. I'd hate it for all the good umps out there, and there are really a lot that are fair and mostly consistent, but i'd like to see the computer umpires introduced and the human element taken out of this.

What he did, what the OP posted, is inexcusable and embarrassing, and he's done this his entire career.

Fire him, they literally have video proof of every game where a player did something he didn't like and he followed it up with a terrible, game-changing call. Let him try to pull the race card, there is enough evidence over the years to overrule that in modern times imo. This is an instance where he is recorded on video during every moment that he is working, it's all out there to be reviewed.

Really the worst part about Hernandez is him throwing fits when players get mad at him for his shitty strike calls. Like when he tossed Kinsler.

Kinsler gets a strike called on a pitch he knew for damn sure wasn't a strike, then when the pitcher throws an entirely obvious ball he turns around to basically say "Is that strike two or are you gonna call that one a ball" and the Hernandez gets mad.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA37NbWEnIU

But yeah a 78% strike call rate is almost as bad.

I've actually seen an NBA ref flop just so they could eject a player.

It was pathetic but somewhat hilarious in a stupid way.

That said I think player ejections (at least in baseball) seem like car crashes in NASCAR, given the amount of cheering when one happens.
