I really enjoyed Papa Johns years ago when I ate it regularly. I'm talking like 10 years ago, every few weeks for months. I was just bored of local places basically, which I admit are better.

But about 3 years ago maybe, my gf and I were staying at a hotel and decided on Papa Johns for dinner. We ordered a pizza with some kind of special crust, I think it was garlic parm? Holy shit.

We both sort of tasted something funny but didn't place what it was until about halfway through when we realized kind of at the same time that what we were tasting was that stomach acid aftertaste you get after vomiting, and I mean it was uncanny how spot on that was. It was the crust. I've never had garlic parm crust on a pizza before, but I've had garlic parm sauce on chicken, and it never tasted like that.

I've been put off Papa Johns ever since lol who knows if it was a one-off thing, maybe not. Hell I'd obviously never have to get that crust again either, but that's what I'll always think of.

I avoid pizza because they make my tummy hurt I wish my body was stronger sometimes

The deep dish pizza at little Caesars is way better than their round pizza imo.

I think I have only tried their pizza twice but both times it was pretty terrible.

The trick with Dominos is get extra cheese, otherwise it's super dry.

The sauce is what ruins it for me for Papa John's. I've never been a fan. Thankfully I live in an area where you could toss a rock in any direction and hit a local pizza place so I never have to rely on any chains.

Just out of curiosity, is that real pizzeria one of those places that gives you a slightly burnt disk or bread with barely anything on it?

Not judging yours, but I watch so many of these best whatever food shows and so many times the pizza looks like burnt bread with almost nothing on it, and people going omg best pizza ever!

Local pizza places can be hit or miss. I've had some that are really good but in my view they're not universally better than the big chains.

As a New Yorker, I can't fathom eating any of that fast food pizza unless it's after midnight and they're the only ones open.

I don't know how big Marco's is, but it has some of the best pizza I've had.

I think was just pepperoni or something simple like that, had it several years ago, don't remember the details exactly, just that it was quite gross. Think it was something with their crust.

I don't really eat these franchise pizza chains to begin with, since I got genuinely good local options where I'm at.

I would definitely agree that local places can be best if they're good.

But of the fast food options Papa Johns is one of my favorites, with Dominoes being #2 at least in this area. I think Dominoes might surpass Papa Johns actually just because every time I've ordered it it's hot and fresh when it gets to me and there hasn't been any mistakes.

Yeah there are some weird things people do with pizza. We tried the trendy new place in the town where I grew up about a year ago, and it was legit the worst looking pizza I have ever seen. Neither of us even touched it. There was water (or something) running on top of it, and just like patches of cheese with the sauce just exposed over most of the surface. We just got our money back and went to the place everyone flocked from to go eat whatever the hell that was supposed to be.

The place I was talking about as a real pizzeria is pretty conventional, just with really good execution.

We used to get it a lot as a teen and I didnt think badly of it then. The garlic sauce admittedly did a lot of the carrying.

I havent had them in a looooong time so I have no idea if theyre worse or if theyve always been bad but Ive got my local 2-3 pizza places to cover all my needs.

I think you have to actually try really hard to fuck up pizza

And somehow Papa Johns makes it look easy.

Idk how you can make pizza be so fucking boring and bland but if that's what you're into, fill your boots.

Pizza chains are one of the most depends-on-where-you-are chains there is. In some towns, Pizza Hut is the best. The quality varies so much from store to store and town to town you cant really say one is the best, all you can say is one is the best in a particular area.

They got to give you that garlic dipping sauce because their crust is so horrible. Its just bland. At least other large pizza chains have some flavor. Papa Johns has nothing. Definitely the worst and by a large margin.

Fair enough, it's been a minute since I've had any of them. Everyone can agree Dominos is the best? That pan pizza kinda slaps.

Papa John's is better than dominos & pizza hut now if you're talking big chains. If you want smaller places, yeah they're bad.

Papa John's used to be good. Heck, they all used to be good, but they've all cut their quality out so hard in the past ten years and they all taste pretty shitty.

I agree that pan pizza they have is good, I just wish they had it in a larger size other than only medium.

Dominoes used to be horrible and I went years without trying it but last year someone at my FF draft brought dominoes and they changed their recipe to something different and it was not bad. Still not my preference but I would eat it.

If domino's could take papa John's crust and breadsticks then I'd eat domino's more. Sadly the only chain pizza place in my town is a domino's.

Papa Johns has that garlic cheese bread thats phenomenal, but their actual pizza is bland as hell. Probably why they pair it with sauces. The pizza doesnt stand on its own.

Dominos used to be barely edible, but they changed their formula like 10 years ago and now its great. I love their crust. Just the right amount of garlic and salt.

Pizza Hut had the opposite transition, going from one of the best to barely edible. I think they focus too much on non-pizza nowadays.

Little Caesars is fine, but it always gives me diarrhea.

Godfathers is still doing its thing I assume. Havent eaten there in years and only ever really went for the Taco Pizza.

Papa Murphy's used to be the absolute best, but its now super expensive.

Yeah, to me Papa John's is the worst of the major chains. Their crust is so bland and flavorless. Their only saving grace was that they were the first to offer rewards. I was cashing in so many free pizzas 10 years ago.

I'd say Domino's > Pizza Hut > Little Caesars > Papa John's

their pizza is meh, but their pasta is pretty alright; i sometimes order it as an excuse to also buy their brownies (which are godtier btw)

I just had one recently because I hadn't had one in a long while, and I wanted to see if it still held up, because I did used to like it in the early 00's. It didn't though, and I shant be returning.
