Correct. Do you concede one reason for a movie bombing is that the target audience was not there?

It can also be used as a compliment as well. Two that comes to mind is Cobra Kai and Puss in Boots The Last Wish. No one asked for both of these properties to be made, but most of us are grateful they were even created to begin with. Sometimes some of the best things are ones that we don't even know we needed.

Especially when they're taking a popular IP and then making something that has nothing to do with the IP and no fans of the IP want.

I would say a lot of times it is because you're acting like you're speaking for a majority and that the majority agrees with you because then it'll make you sound more validated if you make it sound like you have a giant wave of people standing behind you. It's the connotation behind the saying being more problematic.

It's kinda like saying "We all hate this" or "Everyone hates this". There's no actual we or everyone, just you but people will say this kinda stuff, again, to make it sound like there's a large majority agreeing with what the person is saying to make the argument look stronger.

It's aligns with saying "I don't like it so everyone else won't like it too".

I've said for a long time that people on the internet LOVE to criticize shit because they think it makes them seem smarter than the thing or other people.

Pacing is absolutely a thing dude

it's overused by people just looking to criticize something but can't think of an actual criticism. So they fall back on "this is moving too fast/slow" for me. I would say 95% of the time someone says something has "pacing issues" that same person can't explain what they are.

a recent example is Rebirth. Most people who have played it say it's pretty perfectly paced for an RPG, but I've seen others say it's badly paced yet they can never say how or why. It comes off as just sounding contrarian.

Pacing can be subjective and mean a lot of things. For example you can be in an engaging part of the game and then BOOM insert puzzle break and some may think that's a deal breaker.

yeah but that game could be, like, the original Resident Evil or something and that person makes that complaint and it's like "dude...you know what you are playing, right?"

But it's not just games, I hear it all the time for movies, TV shows, and for some reason especially anime. Like, literally every comment section I've been in discussing ANY episode of ANY anime will always have a couple people complaining about the pacing and it's like...come on.

This blender arrived the day my wife divorced me. I had just gotten it open, ready to mix up a nice smoothie, when she walked into the kitchen and slammed down some papers. I was so distraught I forgot to finish making the smoothie. I had a few drinks, passed out for a while, and came back out to see all my smoothie stuff still out. So I finished making a smoothie. Blender has great power, lots of options for blending speeds, and cleans easily.

And then there's the YouTube comment about the guy who used to listen to this song with his dad, then his dad died and the song gives him good memories, and there are like 2k upvotes.

To be fair, that is definitely a real thing. I call it the Pococurante effect, after the character from Candide.

But yeah, virtually every game is designed around pacing, unless it's so old that you finish it in like fifteen minutes anyway, lol.

I personally hate pacing.

Either walk with a purpose or stand still, cowards.

To me, the dumbest criticism is when the complainer proudly declares they stopped watching/reading/playing in act 1 of a maturation story because the main character has a bad attitude.

It depends on the context in the sense that sometimes a product can be so baffling you can't help but wonder who the audience was.

But overall yeah it's hollow criticism. The best and most impactful stuff is something people didn't know they wanted until they saw it. What people ask for is generally boring, inconsistent and focused on what a loud minority is saying anyway.

I would rather someone make something because they want it and are passionate about it instead of following a trend.

You can tell when a person is using pacing as an excuse or if it's a legit argument based on the situation, IMO. For example, if you said the early game's pacing of DQ7 destroyed your interest in the game then I would 100% believe you and that would be a valid point.

However, if you said RE4 is a great game because it has good pacing then I'd prolly just think you're reaching to praise the game and you're being a fanboy.

Pacing is pretty normal thing to talk about. It's a thing mostly from movies.

You can be playing a game and it just doesn't get on with the story or the next thing to do. Levels might feel too long. The plot beats might feel too spread out. The levelling up might feel too slow.

Likewise a game with good pacing means you're always hitting that next thing constantly. It's varied. You're getting new stuff to do. Etc.

Of course video games can make that discussion a bit more complicated as a game can have optional content, people might not care about the plot, people might like doing the same thing over and over etc.

i mean I got people saying anime has pacing issues because they had a recap episode for a week. Because they spent the first 3 minutes of a new episode showing scenes from the last one. People say it about the One Piece anime despite the fact its source material is never-ending! Im not saying it is never legitimate, but more often than not its used for attention for people who seem to only watch things to criticize them.

i can criticize people who use the same criticism for everything. they make it redundant and less believable when it is used, legitimately or not.

Why the fuck is a lot of this topic recently missing and how did we get to start talking about pacing.

But either way, "who asked for this" and "no one asked for this" are usually just springboards for other arguments be they positive or negative.

Who is this for is a legitimate question. Someone addressed it earlier. When Taxi Driver 2 becomes Moulin Rouge on a 200m budget, you should ask who the target demographic even is. It certainly isn't the Taxi Driver fans.
