None. I find that milk is one of the few food items that more often than not is actually spoiled by the use by date.

This. It will be obvious by the smell. You can also taste a bit if you're not sure. Even if milk is starting to go sour, it can be safe to consume and has its uses beyond drinking if you can't stand the taste.

I never care about the date. Sometimes the milk is just fine for a week or two after the date; sometimes it starts "expiring" before the date. It's a crapshoot, so I don't rely on it.

I go by when it starts tasting off, not the date.

I don't go by the smell, either. Milk pretty much always smells weird to me, whether it's expired or not.

I go by smell, but it usually lasts about 2 days before it starts to smell questionable. If stored correctly, it can last up to a week passed the day though.

The smell test is unreliable because the sometimes the dried crusty stuff around rim of the container can smell but the actual milk is fine.

Are you sure you aren't in a pool supply store? Do you go to Food N' Stuff? Where you get most of your food, but also some stuff?

We buy organic milk and that lasts way longer, like the milk in our fridge rn has an expiration date in May

it still says use within 7-10 days of opening for best taste tho

I've had milk that seemed fine at night, then the next morning it was all visibly separated and soured on the exact date from the jug.

Ever since then, I don't fuck with milk expirations.

I go by smell, and if I'm still unsure I'll pour a little bit out to see if it's a smooth liquid or if it has any lumpy bits.

People are oversensitive about this. If your milk is off you'll know by the first sip. Even then the worst thing that will happen is you dislike the experience.

Now if you went and drank a pint of really soured milk then you might get a stomach ache.

Same.

When I would go camping, I would keep like a half gallon in the iced cooler. I've gone almost 2 weeks past before, the ice temps really helps it last longer.

Pour it in a glass first though, because sometimes the lid area will collect milk and spoil.
