BotW had a better story and better shrines and was a more exciting experience the first time around. TotK lets you do more things and get into even more wacky situations. It also has better sidequests and side NPCs. I abstain from voting.

First time playing botw was just magical. Despite putting like 80 more hours in Totk over botw, exploring and collecting everything again feels like a bit of a slog. It's so much more packed. But it does have a lot of QOL improvements from botw.

Totk has better dungeons, better puzzles, and abilities (the fuse + build with ultra hand just gives a lot more possibilities). The abilities are overall much better than the purah pad ones, minus the bombs. The last one in Totk is just crazy.

Hero abilities wise... Totk is kind of broken since you get helpers who don't die. Especially when you max them out.
All the botw ones are really good except for darukas protection.

The zonai stuff is a double edged sword. Cause it gives endless possibilities, but it kind of makes already existing things like horse travel, less useful.

hmm... botw. tears of the kingdom does a lot of things better than botw in terms of gameplay, but the story is so colossally disappointing for me that it just sours my whole experience. i replayed botw a couple times just to soak up the bits of lore, rewatch the cutscenes, etc... there wasn't much to the story in botw, but what there was had a little mystery and seemed to tie back to the lore. totk's story barely even tied back to the game that came right before. and it was just very bland, forgettable. we brought back ganondorf just to basically not do anything with him. all the zonai stuff just kind of overshadowed the rest of zelda lore and it just didn't have a good feel to it.

it was so bad even the zelda tubers dumped on it. and it's the reason i haven't touched totk since i beat it when it released.

Breath of the wild. Divine beasts were better than totks dungeons. Better quests. I felt the towns in BoTW developed more with side quests. There would always be something new to do when you returned. Whereas with totk I feel like I could clear the side quests in any town in a couple of hours and then there'd be nothing to do there anymore.

I really like totk. I just like BoTW more.

BotW was more of a fresh experience, while TotK is bigger (maybe too big?) and more refined, and Ultrahand is fun to mess around with. On the other hand, constantly having to fuse weapons does get old pretty fast. TotK also definitively puts both games into their own timeline, if anyone cares about that, but that also kind of dulls the impact of Calamity Ganon in retrospect.

Hard choice, personally.

They said they've pretty much exhausted their ideas for the BotW world with TotK, which is why TotK isn't getting any DLC. They're ready to move on to the next Zelda world.

For me, its that the BotW world never felt empty, playing the game never felt like a grind and every time you play the game for more than 2 minutes you feel like youre making some kind of progress. None of those things felt true for me with TotK.

BotW was beautiful in its simplicity, there were things I didn't like but overall I thought it was a good time. TotK was good but there was too much resource management and Minecraft-y-ness which I like in some games but I don't like here.

Both are good, but BotW I played straight through, TotK I got tired of less than halfway in.

BotW was a better experience

TotK wasn't different enough and some of the stuff they DID change just wasn't enough to make it as fresh. Still a great game, but when I look at how the experiences were, BotW takes the cake

TOTK is by far a better gameplay experience, and fixed some of my biggest problems with BOTW by giving monster parts more purpose, and thus incentivizing combat. The combat/materials loop is just way better, not to mention the absurdly creative machines and how they interact with the environment.

However, the game feels weirdly disjointed and doesnt feel like it takes full advantage of everything it couldve. The overworld music is basically the exact same as BOTW for most of the game. The sheikah tech and everything is just inexplicably gone. The memory tears can just completely spoil that entire plot line if you find the wrong one early. The depths and sky islands are SO HALF BAKED.

I voted TOTK and overall love the game, but I cant help but be disappointed at how strangely disjointed it feels sometimes.

I think TotK is technically better, but I think I like BotW more just because it was so new and amazing.

Just like how Splatoon 1 will forever be the best one because of how new and fresh it was.

No real preference. Aside from the machine building gimmick TotK is pretty much a BotW expansion. Both are ruined by weapon durability. At least you can repair most weapons before they break in TotK, then you're constantly running to the octoroks so you don't lose your Lynel horn or whatever.

I wish they did more with Ganondorf, especially story wise. I do prefer him over Calamity Ganon. Both games have scattered story cut scene stories due to the timer being open world.

Whatever technical list of pros and cons I can weigh up for both games is irrelevant for me personally. Because the simple fact remains that BotW was a once-in-a-generation, couldn't-put-it-down, let-the-dishes-pile-up-in-the-sink-for-a-month gaming event for me, while TotK took me over six months of starting / stopping and losing / regaining interest to get through.

Breath of the Wild.

The best part of Tears of the Kingdom was it was more of one of my favorite games of all time. The worst part was...it was just more of one of my favorite games of all time.

If they made a Zelda with the new mechanics introduced, but in a completely new world, setting, enemies, etc, I could very well have like it as much as BotW or more. But there's just too much familiarity in it despite the massive amount of content they added. Not to mention it sort of "messes up" the world for me.

I think BOTW had better designed shrines which are the meat of the game. Though Totk can get crazy with all the stuff you can make and has a better story presentation. Bit hard for me to choose.

me too, it was one of the worst letdowns for me that they brought ganondorf back just to serve essentially the same role as calamity ganon, sit in his bossroom until you walk in. granted we had puppet zelda and phantom ganon(s), but i wanted him in a more active role in the story.
