I don't think any rules are needed to be changed in that scenario. It's a simple majority of who is there at that time.

Not at that time to elect a Dem speaker, but a rules change would potentially be needed to prevent a single rep from submitting a motion to vacate afterward. Though I suppose if all Republicans are present, or at least represent a majority present, if they were all in lockstep, there'd be nothing to stop another vacate motion from going forward.

Yeah, it was a compromise bill because that's all it could be because it had to pass a Democrat controlled Senate. The only conclusion to be drawn is that MTG and other maga Republicans wanted a government shutdown and are mad they didn't get it.

As far as the motion to vacate goes, it has to come from someone in your caucus, from what I recall.

Not working together is fine for many Republicans, because no matter how selfish, stupid, evil, and corrupt they are, their base will never call them on it, and the media at large will give them a pass. Hell, their base wants them to never work together. Meanwhile "swing voters" will ignore Republicans refusing to come together and compromise, but they'll tar and feather a Democrat that doesn't completely fold 100% of the time as opposed to caving just 80% of the time.

But not working with Republicans doesn't help Democrats, and in this specific instance, it would only cause harm for more people. Republicans would still be in control after the chaos concluded, the same as they remained in control the last time it just happened. Better to get something from it than nothing. This would not be bailing out Republicans. It would be securing the funding needed to get help to Ukraine, and stopping another circus from happening.

Democrats need to use all of this stuff in the following months though. Campaigns against Republicans need to highlight the uselessness of Republicans who hold a majority in the House, but are spending time fighting each other and parading around foreign spies peddling lies.

Because that would be the deal to be made with him. Funding of Ukraine to secure his position. If an actual vote were to come up for him to vacate, he couldn't lose a single Republican vote if he wanted to stay in power. This is just a potential for a deal to be made. Who knows if it would ever get to that point. A deal was made for funding the US, but that is a different beast.

That only thing that has been vacated is the contents of mtg's brain.

Dems have masterful propped MTG up as the face of the GQP, knowing how destructive she is. This is working out well.

The hell they did. Trump is the face of the GOP all on his own "merits" and Dems over-fixate on Trump even though there's dozens of politicians in Congress just as or more evil than him.
