I'd say his movie depiction is probably the one that gets him the idolization. They cut out his bootlicking absolutism for a need to make the truth known regardless of the outcome, which I find much more respectable.

I haven't read him do it yet but he is a huge rape apologist which you can see on post 5. In fact directly after that sequence the comic flashes back to the actual event where indeed you see the Comedian violently assault someone.

Rorschach, despite hatefully dismissing the masses of the US as pedophile vermins, is totally forgiving of actions like attempted rape as long as the person otherwise acted in a way Rorschach conceptualizes as somehow in service to the country.

This may be largely a meme is the thing. There's a similar one where people argue that you could technically never convict Saw and they'll pretend to be law school graduates and say it was taught in class

If I remember correct, Rorschach starts like he sees things as black and white, but later we learn that it is more to feel good at the moment.
He beats up a rapist and leaves him to the police, but he got no stronger feelings about the Comedians rape.
He probably thought that she deserved it the way she dressed or something.
He also stops beating up somebody because he sees a crying kid.

I can see how somebody could walk away from Watchmen with the perspective that Rorshach was right and the world just effin sucks. Even in the comic.

The story is about a changing world and rigid ideology. It even frames the guy who's most trying to adapt as the villain, until he convinces everyone else to agree with him.

In that interpretation, Rorshach would be the one voice of reason being driven to madness by the pressure of a world that won't tolerate his ideals, until it eventually unjustly kills him to erase his ideology.

By no means do I think that's the intended interpretation or anything. But the story is plenty complex for different people to take different things away from it.

The film version of him has some admirable traits, despite all of his rough edges, and while he is a borderline lunatic with his methods and is paranoid to a fault, much of his drive is somewhat justified when you weigh up what he's up against and just how bad things have gotten.

By the end of the film, he's the only character who was unwilling to let Veidt get away with murdering an entire city, and in most interpretations of morality, his is an understandable stance. None of the other 'heroes' do anything other than meekly accept what has happened and become accomplices to mass murder.

In any other story, he'd be a much harder character to identify with, and -with his extreme methods- would probably be more of a villain if anything, a Batman gone wrong type character, but the other characters around him are so much worse at their core, and in what they are prepared to live with, in spite of coming across as more noble or respectable.

Agreed, it's not just his "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me" line, he was also the only one with convictions strong enough that he wouldn't go along with it and directly told Manhattan to "do it" knowing that he would, and that it was the only way to stop him from leaking everything to the public.

He wasn't meant to be likeable, but he was the most likeable out of all the characters in terms of morality. Like, Manhattan literally ended his "fuck the human race" attitude and solitude because he learned that the love of his life is a rape baby. That's some dumb shit.
