Because at the one I went to the most when I was young, they didn't let people use the child ones because those were reserved for events for schools & such. So if you went with your parents or they didn't let you use those, you had to go into the male/female sections. Having young kids in a rec center locker room with old men 60+ with their junk hanging out is weird, people had no decorum in that rec center, even if I was with a parent while in there. sometimes this happens in gyms too which is why a lot of them have very strict dress code or behavior guidelines now. If I had a kid, I would always go into the bathroom with them until they're around 14/15, but younger than that it's better for them to always be accompanied by an adult.
