The self checkout lanes at my Target are like 4 times as long as the two regular checkout lanes that are generally open. Seems like a losing strategy.

I was in another store, not walmart, and they too had all their self check-out lanes closed and cordoned off. They only had one cashier available. . .

There's a supermarket near me where you have to scan your badly printed, flimsy, receipt to leave the self-checkout area.

It takes 2 or 3 goes to work while everyone else sighs and tells you to flatten it out, or whatever.

Such a pain in the arse, I can't be bothered any more.

The one by my house did this a few weeks ago and the last time I went in, they still havent brought it back. One one hand, Im glad because it forces them to put workers on the floor, but its also an inconvenience and an open accusation of theft.

Anyway, I'd probably wonder why I'm in a Walmart instead of any other store. With all the self checkouts closed, I bet there's 1-2 cashiers up front regardless.

The Target near me has also started closing off self-checkout lanes. Ill just stop shopping at both unless it cannot be avoided. If they want to do this to combat theftfine, whatever, but they need to open all regular checkout lanes then. Seeing self-checkout closed but only 2 to 3 standard lanes open is supremely aggravating.

I figured it out! The plan is to make it so nobody can leave and then start renting out small apartments inside the building.

Because they will create conditions that force it. And if you want an example of this kind of thing working, just look at fast passes at any theme park or precheck at the TSA. If you give people a paid option to access a much shorter line, some people will do it simply because they have the expendable income and that's what their time is worth.

And not only will it work, but it will work too well. An airport near me had to dedicate an entire TSA checkpoint just to PreCheck because the pre-check lines were getting too long and people were complaining that they were paying for a service they weren't getting. So what will happen is Walmart will open some sort of premium only fast lane, and then that lane will get too backed up so they'll start locking out other self-checkout stations to be premium only until both the regular check out and the standard self-checkout have impossibly long lines.

Maybe they're going to update the self-checkout with "AI" so they can juice their stock price because "AI".

Nah. If Walmart is going to add AI to anything, it'll be them trying to do something like uber style surge pricing on goods. So that the next time there's a mad rush for paper towel because of a pandemic or something, the price will literally go up per unit sold as the system dynamically calculates what people would be willing to pay based on the current demand.

Barely shop at Walmart. Place is a turd.

My local Walmart is ridiculous. They have like 4 employees in the self-checkout area watching/assisting people as they check out. Last time I went I couldn't even use the kiosk until an employee swiped her card. At this point just put these people to work behind an actual register.

For Target this will push more to do drive up. But that really works against them, they rely on soccer moms to go in for one thing and buys lots of random shit they dont need - heck, they have a dedicated spot at the entrance of cheap shit you dont need.
