The gradient of internet literacy in millennials is huge though (for example browsing here and downloading some basic stuff doesnt mean you know how to torrent or USENET), and knowing your way around old Windows where you still had device management doesnt mean you can build a PC. There are late gen x who know way more about computers.

The issue with Gen Z isn't so much their tech illiteracy as that's to be expected, but it's the frightening and dangerous lack of media literacy. It's not necessarily their own fault but it gives off the impression of them being objectively stupid as fuck and unable to both communicate or solve a lot of different problems.

I spent the better part of a decade repairing computers and electronics and Zoomers were always the worst clients to deal with. They were just as gullible and supsceptible to viruses and scams as Boomers and geriatrics and would often come in claiming their devices were "broken" when it'd be something as simple as a setting being tweaked. My employer stopped hiring people around that age because the turnover was so bad. They would often lie about knowing how to fix things and most would end up trying to find solutions not only on YouTube, but only specific YouTube channels. I remember asking someone why they don't try Googling it and their response was "there's too much shit that comes up and a lot of that shit is probably old".

Yep. A lot of this push for "ban TikTok!" came in the aftermath of it being used to troll and embarrass Trump at his Tulsa rally.

I hope they ban it, burn the server farms to the ground, and then salt the earth where they once stood.

While I hate TikTok, I'm not too keen on the government dictating what I can and cannot use. I am iffy on this ruling.

I think TikTok is probably fine to get rid of cause it is legit just a farm for data (like I'm sure most of our US apps do anyway). We really, REALLY need a better privacy act created like GDPR in the EU. Having some semblance of control over my personal info and who can use it would be lovely. Won't ever happen though.

Millennials and Gen X have much better computer and Internet skills than Zoomers and Boomers. (Boomers were too old when the Internet started taking off and Zoomers were born into the Internet when it essentially became "easy mode" to use).

China will complain but TikTok is also banned in their country. They have an internal variant citizens use but the international app is banned entirely.

In my experience the boomers ive worked with literally struggle to navigate basic webpages and have locked out computers because they thought the Bitlocker password was supposed to be their personal password. Ive not met a person in their 20s thats done anything close to that.

The oldest Gen Z people were also born in 1997, so why would they struggle significantly more than someone born 2 years earlier?

It'd be impossible. The cat's out of the bag and the only feasible way we can fix things is by heavily regulating social platforms, but that won't be a good idea since it would probably result in a lot of first amendment issues and government(s) being authoritarian and suppressive.

I've said it a shitload of times but the root of all of this bullshit is smartphones and residential broadband internet access becoming too affordable.
