https://www.si.com/nba/timberwolves/news/ill-be-the-bad-guy-rudy-gobert-implies-nba-refs-are-driven-by-sports-betting

He says he takes blame for their loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers but he believes sports betting is influencing the game and also the refs

"Yeah, of course it's frustrating. Then obviously my reaction, which I think is the truth I truly believe and even if it is the truth, I think it wasn't the time for me to react that way. I should have not done that. Cost my team the game. And obviously, they can't wait to give me a tech. So yeah, that was a bad, that was an immature reaction from me," Gobert admitted afterward.

They're not betting on games, but they definitely know shit and anyone thinking they don't is naive.

Betting becoming mainstream is new in the US and people are really naive to think noone would think to temper with stuff, especially stuff that's irrelevant to the sport like spread on points difference during regular season games noone cares about.

Eventually it evens out as teams benefit from refereeing sometimes.

It is possible they dont know this stuff. For example I personally dont care about sports betting and there are a lot of terms and methodology I dont even understand, let alone the actual numbers. Maybe the refs are also thinking if I look too closely at this stuff Im going to lose my job and block it out

But they should be investigated, no reason not to. Some refs absolutely could be gambling and thats the only way to know

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Donaghy

And yet nothing happened.
Refs in the NBA are their own union and noone can do shit to them.
I'm not talking about betting, but in general.
Much like players, some refs are better and more talented than others, while some are just incompetent and their mistakes are a product of them not being good enough.
Unlike most other sports, the league has no power to remove those refs and we have to watch them make it all about themselves game in and game out.

Baseball has the same problem with their umpires. It's why Angel Hernandez is still around, being the worst fucking umpire you've ever seen, blowing calls left and right while power-tripping and ejecting anyone who argues with him. MLB even started doing league-wide umpire evaluations to objectively quantify just how shit at his job Angel Hernandez is, and they still can't fire him.

I wouldn't be surprised if some MLB umpires also have money on games like I'm sure some NBA refs do. But at the same time, I think more games and point spreads are swung in baseball by sheer incompetence rather than active fixing, because there are a lot of genuinely terrible umpires still in the league.

Scott Foster, who reffed this game, literally is known for ref jobs like this. There's a reason Gobert taunted him that way, even though it was dumb as shit.

Wouldn't surprise me if there's a lot of refs who bet on games and influence the outcome.

Same for the NFL.

He just got hit with a 100K fine

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/11/sport/rudy-gobert-100k-fine-money-gesture-spt-intl/index.html

In an official release on Sunday, the NBA stated that the Timberwolves center had been fined for directing an inappropriate and unprofessional gesture toward a game official, and publicly criticizing the officiating.

The fine takes into account Goberts past instances of conduct detrimental to the NBA with regard to publicly criticizing the officiating, the statement added.

The problem with Scott Foster is the dude refs almost purely on emotions and act like his position is some form of highest power. I imagine the main reason why the NBA won't fire him is because there's a ref union protecting him. NBA cares more about money than anything and Scott Foster loses them money so if I were them I'd want him out.

This NBA ref made a Twitter burner to defend NBA refs and getting investigated for it and then he retired right after.

As been posted, the refs have their own very protected unions. The NBA would need concrete evidence of a ref rigging games for them to fire one of them like they did with Donaghy.

What's funny is Silver has stated that refs doing bad officiating jobs do in fact gets punished but they just don't publicize it like they do with NBA players if they do something bad. Refs would literally lose out on officiating playoff games if they suck which means they would lose potential income I imagine, but that hasn't deterred them much from making ass calls.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10065970-adam-silver-says-nba-doesnt-publicize-punishment-for-referees-for-missed-calls

"We don't publicize discipline for officials. We don't think that will be appropriate. But their assignments are affected by the quality of their calls, whether or not they progress into the playoffs and then round by round is impacted by the accuracy of their calls and their demeanor on the floor. So there is a system for overseeing and making those judgements about officials. But more to your earlier point about getting the calls right, that's again not a new issue."

NBA refs in the past have been caught betting on games. there was/still is a whole racket going on for this type of stuff.

to say refs arent bias towards star players that have juice outside of the game is blasphemy. *cough* lebron.

As someone who has been watching the nba for over 30 years, it is pretty obvious that the refs are able to freely manipulate games. The league protects them too.

Kinda similar in that both unions protect their people, even when they're horribly incompetent at their jobs.
